Counselor Corner
October flew by in a blink of an eye. Let’s take a moment to recap what has been accomplished in Spartan Start! Each day from 7:55 until 8:45 students participate in Spartan Start. The first half is content created by school counselors, with a focus on social and emotional well being. On Monday and Tuesday each week we use the Second Step curriculum for Middle School. Second Step is a program used by the district, starting in grade Kindergarten. Click the LINK for more information.
On Wednesday and Thursday counselors create content around a monthly theme. October was Kindness and Bullying Prevention. Students and teachers have had beautiful conversations around how to keep our school a welcoming and safe place for ALL students. We celebrated Unity Day on October 16th with a Cheesy Competition. Students were encouraged to wear orange to show their support for anti-bullying efforts. One Spartan Start in each grade won a barrel of Cheese Balls for wearing the most orange. The following Spartan Start classes were the big winners!
6th Grade - Mrs. Disrude’s class
7th Grade - Ms. Rood’s class
8th Grade - Mrs. Prescott-Moerke’s class
If you are curious about what Spartan Start looks like or are interested in learning more, please reach out to your child’s school counselor.
6th Grade - Becky Nickila
7th Grade - Michelle Welsand
8th Grade - Maryann Bonneville

Cutting back on sugar consumption
Tis’ the season… sugar is EVERYWHERE! From Halloween to Valentine’s Day and every holiday in between, it is a season for added sugar intake. Candy, pies, cookies, and holiday treats are all in surplus this time of year. Sugar in the body creates a cascade of negative effects, including: lack of concentration, energy crashes, food cravings, mood swings, anxiety, irritability, and many other feelings/symptoms. This is not unique to students though; children and adults experience such presentations when they are consuming too many sugary foods or drinks. It is very important to have an awareness of the alarming amount of added sugars that are in many foods such as holiday cookies, coffee/energy beverages, yogurts, cereals/granola, protein bars or shakes, condiments, salad dressings, spaghetti sauce, pop, and so many more. It is recommended that children consume no more than 3-6 teaspoons (or 12-24 grams) of sugar per day. Today, children are consuming up to 16 teaspoons of sugar per day (up to 64 grams!!!) which can lead to many serious health conditions. (Not to mention- excess sugar diminishes our immune system; ever wonder why illnesses increase so much in the winter months?)
The health office recommends focusing especially on reducing sugary drinks and encourages zero-sugar added water flavorings instead of pop or juice. Making small changes may help improve your child's moods, behaviors, and concentration. Give it a try and see if you notice a difference! Happy Holidays 🙂
November is Native American Heritage Month, here are things happening in the district to celebrate!
We are very excited to offer a new opportunity starting Monday, November 4 for our middle school athletes. We are inviting our 6-8 grade student-athletes to Superior High School on Monday and Thursday mornings (on days we have school). Sign-up link is below.
The training will be focused on Speed, Agility and Quickness. It will primarily take place in our gym. Those who attend consistently will become faster, more explosive athletes. We will measure their speed and power weekly to celebrate and ensure we are making gains.
The sessions will start at 6:30 each Monday and Thursday morning and will end at 7:15. There will be non resistant and resistant training using bands, bungees and med balls while performing dynamic movements.
This opportunity is open to every student regardless of their sport preferences and passions as improvements will transfer across all sports. Workouts will be structured in a manner where they will not affect grades 6-8 in season performance, they will only help performance. There is no need to worry about an athlete's performance being compromised in the afternoon or evening because they attended a session that morning. We will not be endurance training, we will be working on quick movements in short duration with recovery between reps.

Families will need to provide their own transportation to Superior High School. There will be a bus provided to offer transportation from Superior High School to the Superior Middle School at 7:20 on Mondays and Thursdays.
Please have your child enter Door N3 (gym entrance on the Northside of Superior High School) upon arriving at the high school.
Just a heads up, we'll be starting career lessons using Xello (Career Program) during the month of December, please ask your children about their participation, thanks for your help! Watch this video on Xello.

Spartan families please note that Progress Reports (Report Cards at SMS) will be coming to contact 1 and 2 through email on November 15th. Families should stay connected through PowerSchool to see their student's scores and feedback. If you need access to PowerSchool, please call the school for your student's access ID and password to create an account.
Need help navigating PowerSchool? Take a look at the PowerSchool page on our website for helpful documents, and links.
Attendance Matters!
