Lewis School "Escape the School"

As families entered the school, they were given an "Escape the School" answer sheet with the location for the student's grade level challenge. Parents and students then traveled to each location and completed the challenge as a family. Teachers were available in each area to assist, as needed. As each challenge was completed, students filled in the answer sheet. After all five challenges were completed, parents and students used their answers on the front of their answer sheet to solve a final puzzle on the back, which revealed the secret word needed to "escape the school."

The Scholastic Book Fair was also open during the event and families were encouraged to browse for books. In addition, there was also book raffle. Teachers were on hand to assist parents with registering for FOCUS and applying for Free/Reduced lunch. The event was a huge success with overwhelmingly positive reviews from parents, students, and teachers.

Walker Participates in 2022 National Family Engagement Summit

In October, Walker Title I teachers, Kara Ryles and Lauren McMillan, attended the National Family Engagement Summit held in Charlotte, NC. The summit was two full days of informative breakout sessions and keynote speakers centered around family engagement. Ryles and McMillan were struck by the wide variety of participants which included not only educators, administrators, and counselors, but also parents, non-profits, and child advocates. Big themes that emerged from the summit included innovative ways to engage ALL families, barriers that schools face when planning events, the value in home visits, creative use of funding, and how to promote successful events.

Walker is looking forward to planning and implementing some new ideas to engage families. We will start with setting up a meeting for our hard to reach families. This event will be held in a venue outside of the school building. Ryles and McMillan are also exploring food options (food trucks and reaching out to the culinary program at the high schools to partner with them) as well as incorporating brief weekly surveys to enhance two-way communication between the school and families.

Did You Know? School-Parent Compact

Each Title I school must develop, with parent/family member input, a school-specific agreement of how the parent/family, the school staff, and students share the responsibilities for improved student achievement. This document is meant to formalize a partnership for the school and parents to work together to support students. Schools need to distribute copies of this compact to every parent and keep these on file. The compacts can be used in parent-teacher conferences as a reminder of actions that parents, and students have agreed on. School-Parent Compacts may be created by grade-levels with family input and make the compact an improvement tool and ensure genuine parent and family engagement.
