P-TECH Freshmen Attend International Ice Hockey Game
On Tuesday, April 9, P-TECH freshmen traveled to Utica to attend an International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Women's World Championship tournament game. The students watched China play against Germany at the Adirondack Bank Center. This was a great opportunity for our students to see some of the world's top hockey players perform. Germany won the game with a score of three to zero. Students reported that it was an exciting experience. Click below to see highlights from the game!
P-TECH Student in Criminal Justice Program Earns Promotion
P-TECH senior Amyah Best was recently promoted to the role of sergeant in her Criminal Justice II class. Amyah is from the Rome City School District. Students earn this distinction through strong attendance and academic performance. They also demonstrate respect toward peers and teachers, and regularly display the leadership skills required in the public safety field. This promotion brings responsibilities as well. When both the captain and lieutenant are absent, the sergeant leads the class and is responsible for completing several duties. They must ensure that each student places his or her cell phone on the front table before class, return graded papers from the student outbox, and make sure that all notebooks, badges and ties are in an orderly manner in their designated area at the end of the class. Congratulations Amyah!
Student Presentations in ELA and Global Studies
Mrs. Giruzzi's ELA 10 students have been working diligently on their argumentative essays. Recently, they presented their arguments to their classmates. Students created slideshows and provided evidence for their positions, including audio examples such as songs created using artificial intelligence. They polled their audience before and after their presentations to determine if their arguments were effective.
Additionally, Mrs. Wagner and Mr. Wurz combined their ELA and Global Studies classes to complete a collaborative project. Students created their own podcasts, which the teachers then played for the classes to see and hear. The podcasts were about Renaissance and Modern Art works. Students researched both a Renaissance painting and Modern Art work and shared their reflections in podcast form.
P-TECH PRIDE Day
P-TECH PRIDE represents the program's core principles of Partnership, Respect, Innovation, Diversity and Excellence. For one day each month, the program steps away from regularly scheduled classes to provide programming focused on these core principles.
This month, the P-TECH students practiced partnership and innovation through a check-in with P-TECH partner Trenton Technology regarding the industry challenge. The Trenton Technology representatives came into the school to give feedback to student groups on their work thus far. Students are designing an alignment jig for assembling a heatsink. They looked at the students' designs and made suggestions for their next steps to move forward.
Students also practiced respect by cleaning up the campus in celebration of Earth Day. Students worked in groups to pick up litter across the entire OHM BOCES Main Campus. Thank you to all of the students for your hard work!
NYPA Career Academy Visits P-TECH Sophomores
The NYPA Career Academy featuring the Drone Cadets came to P-TECH OHM to visit our sophomores. The Drone Cadets provided our students with a course covering drone safety and how to fly their equipment. Students learned about important characteristics of drones, new laws regarding the use of drones, and crucial safety practices. They also studied the requirements for commercial drone use. After learning the safety procedures and how to control the drones, the students had the opportunity to fly small drones in their groups. While flying, students attempted various challenges, such as taking off and landing in different locations, as well as flying through obstacles. Students had a great time practicing their skills!
