The APHS Look AHEAD

Dear APHS Students, Parents and Guardians,

Spring is in full bloom and we have reached the final ten weeks of the 2020-2021 school year! It's been a very unique year, to say the least, but I am happy to report that we are poised to end on a solid foot. Virtual and remote Instruction, along with a hybrid in-person model, presented many new challenges to both our students and our teachers when it came to the teaching and learning process. The good news is that we have continued to grow together, adapt, and improve our practices on all ends. As we head into the 4th quarter, we have collectively reduced the number of students who are failing one or more classes by over 50% as compared to our first quarter. This is a success we ALL share!

During the last two months of the year, please be sure to keep the focus on finishing strong. If you have questions about how a student is doing, don't hesitate to actively reach out to our teachers and/or counselors for assistance. We know that the past year has been a struggle for many, so please also remember that we are here to support students who may be facing emotional challenges, as well. Let's remember that we are in this together, and need to work together, to take good care of the needs of each and every one of our students.

In the weeks to come, please watch your email and social media for continued updates and announcements related to end-of-the-year activities and events, including our graduation for the APHS Class of 2021. This has been a challenging topic, as guidelines and regulations change faster than ever. I will be actively staying in touch as we iron out solid solutions to each event. You will note at the end of this edition, we have shared some dates for events we already have on the books.

Finally, each month I share a calendar from Action for Happiness. This month's theme is all about reflecting on what gives our life meaning. Being a part of something bigger than ourselves and focusing on things that we value is key to our wellbeing. So let's take time to reflect on what we care about this month and keep these things at the front of our minds as our societies begin to open up again. Here is your Meaningful May Calendar. https://www.actionforhappiness.org/meaningful-may

Serving every student every day,

The APHS Building Leadership Team

Update Regarding Regents and Final Exams

As you may be aware, recently the United States Department of Education (USDOE) denied New York State’s testing waiver request. We want to share some updates about how this decision will impact Regents examinations and local final examinations at APHS this year.

Regents Examinations

To meet the federal government’s requirements, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) has canceled all but four of the Regents examinations previously scheduled to be administered in June 2021. Similar to June 2020, all students enrolled in and passing courses culminating with the following Regents examinations will automatically receive a “EX” designation on their transcript. These students will be exempt from these exams.

The Regents exams which are canceled for June 2021 are:

Global History & Geography

U.S. History & Government

Geometry

Algebra II

Chemistry

Physics

Four core Regents examinations will be held according to the following schedule:

English Language Arts – June 17th 8:00 am

Living Environment – June 22 8:00 am

Algebra I – June 23 8:00 am

Earth Science – June 24 8:00 am

Students are NOT required to take the four above Regents examinations. All students enrolled in and passing courses culminating with one of these four Regents will automatically receive the “EX” designation on their transcripts. By default, they will be exempt from these exams. Students can, however, choose to take the exams if they are enrolled in these courses, if they would like.

If your student would like to participate in one of the four core Regents exams listed above, his/her parent/guardian should complete the Google Form using the link that was emailed on April 30th and April 15th.

If a form is not submitted, we will assume that a student will not be participating.

If a student who takes an exam ultimately wishes to have the numeric grade for the exam placed on his/her transcript, instead of the automatic "EX", parents will have the option to complete and submit a form to do so in late June/early July. You do not need to decide this now. We will send out a reminder about this option again, as we get closer to the administration of these four exams.

Final Examinations

To ensure both equity and empathy for all APHS students, we will cancel all large-scale, grade-level local final examinations for the 2020-21 school year. We believe this decision is in the best interest of our students given the current climate. It reflects the spirit of the Regents exam decisions made by the New York State Education Department to ensure as much fairness to students as possible.

Teachers will give any course-specific final assessments within the instructional time allotted to their courses. In courses linked with colleges and universities, year-end assessments will be administered in class, if required as part of those partnership agreements.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your student's teacher, counselor, or the HS Office at 674-7002.

Free Meals for ALL Students Extended Through the School Year

The Food Service Department of the Averill Park Central School District is proud to be an important partner with our families during the pandemic. We firmly believe our District's mission of meeting the needs of and creating opportunities for Every Student, Every Day includes your child's nutritional needs.

Thanks to an extension of the US Department of Agriculture's program currently providing for free breakfast and lunch, we will continue to be providing free breakfast & lunch to ALL students through June 30, 2021. We strongly encourage all our families to participate in this essential child nutrition program, as we continue to support each other through these challenging times.

Delivering Backpacks to those in need

Every week students from S.A.G.E.S. and AP Connections, pack and deliver backpacks for students in need. Recently, students were escorted by SRO Deputy Brian Nikles. They also got to visit a couple of virtual friends along the way. Several of these students haven't seen each other, in-person, in over a year. Smiles all around!

After school help available for students

We continue to offer after school help with teachers on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays of each week. We recognize this as a great opportunity for students to access some individual or small group help, and we encourage students to access this support. .

If your student is staying after school and does not require transportation, they simply need to make arrangements with their teachers on the day they wish to stay. If your student does require transportation they will need to complete the After School Sign up form, located under the Family Resources tab on the district website. I have attached it here for your convenience. After School Help Form Please note, once students have completed their time with their teacher, they will need to report to the high school cafe to await their ride or the bus. Only students who have pre-arranged times with their teachers are allowed to stay.

If you feel your child is in need of extra academic support, we encourage you to discuss this valuable resource with them. As always please reach out to your child's counselor if you have further questions about their academic needs.

A World of Difference makes a difference

The A World of Difference club at APHS spent part of April 14 presenting pro-acceptance topics to Mrs. Slyer's Grade 6 & 7 students. AMS & APHS students had some great discussion about such topics as: Racism, Discrimination, Bias, & Prejudice. AMS Students spent time creating uplifting Post-Its to hang in the hallways of AMS. These kids truly will make "A World of Difference".

Join the Civic Ecology Club at APHS

Attention all Averill Park High School students! Care about the environment? Want to make Averill Park High School a more sustainable place? Then join the Civic Ecology Club which meets after school every Wednesday!

Last year the club was made up of seniors who have since graduated from the high school. The current members are Isabelle Relyea (President), Isla Multunas (Vice President), Simone Schwarz-Eise (Secretary), Cavan Hicks, and Margaret Finnerty. We are looking for new members to help us do more and make an even greater impact on our community.

Right before the lockdown, the Ecology Club was working to implement a composting program into the APHS cafeteria. Currently the club is focused on teaching young elementary students about the environment and is planning readings and related activities to be held during the after school GGC program. We are also looking to restart the composting project back into the high school in the near future and will be holding a nature walk to talk to some interested students and explore the beautiful trails behind APHS. The club’s Instagram page and Twitter accounts both post about current environmental conservation related issues and events. The handle is @apteamgreen. Our goal is to reach out to the community with valuable information. Did you know? You can make an immediate positive impact by simply no longer using plastic bags for your lunch? This idea is highlighted in Isabelle Relyea’s recent post on our instagram page. Check it out!

If you are interested in joining or just visiting us to learn more, please email our fabulous club advisor Mrs. Sorriento sorrientol@apcsd.org.

Student Angler Club News!

The Student Angler Club is excited to announce that two of its members, Lucas Reiter and Mike Angrisano (both juniors) have entered The Legacy Junior Bass Fishing Tournament to compete for a spot on the High School New York State Bass Fishing Team that will compete on the national level in September.

Lucas and Mike will be competing against other high school students from New York. This is a first for Averill Park and a first for Lucas and Mike. Lucas’ father has volunteered his boat and agreed to be the Captain but they need additional gear to be competitive. Our boys are the underdogs and need your help.

The Student Angler Club is launching a fundraising campaign. Money raised will go directly towards buying Mike and Lucas the extra lures, poles, and equipment that are required. There are three levels of giving:

Level #1 -$10.00 “Give the Kid a Lure”. The tournament consists of several contests throughout late spring and summer. That’s a lot of fishing. Both boys need spare lures and plastics.

Level #2 - $25.00 “ Rig it like a Pro”. Extra equipment is needed on the boat. A digital scale, tackle storage, and rod sleeves are just a few. If you donate $25.00, Lucas and Mike will share their favorite warm water lures and plastics and will give you their advice on how to rig them.

Level #3 - $50.00 “Give and You Shall Receive”. The boys know they have huge fans in our school. To show their appreciation for a donation of $50.00, Mike and Lucas will give one beginning fishing lesson from the shore of a local lake/pond. To be considered for the state team, the boys have to accumulate points by catching fish at each of the contests in the tournament. If a pole breaks or bearings slip in a reel during a contest, they are done for the day. Each boy should have an extra pole and reel as back up.

Support and generosity does not always have to be in the form of money. If you are a fisherman/woman and have extra equipment that you are not using, the boys will gladly accept any donations of used items in excellent working condition as well.

If you are interested in supporting Mike Angrisano and Lucas Reiter in the quest to be the first Averill Park High School students to make the New York State HIgh School Youth Bass Fishing Team, please contact Bernice Gawron, Student Angler Club Advisor by email or stop by Room 225.

News from the Health Office

E-mails via Schooltool went out to those families on April 21st of those who have a 9th and 11th grader that are still in need of sending in their child's physical to meet NYS requirements. Please check your spam folder or reach out to Mrs. Miller via email at millerv@apcsd.org if you have any questions or concerns.

Dear parent/guardian:

You are receiving this because there is no update physical on file for your 9th and/or 11th grader

State law requires your child to have a physical examination because he or she either entered school within our District for the first time this year or they are in kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, or 11th grade. 8 NYCRR 136.3(b)(1). The District previously requested you have your own health care provider conduct this evaluation but our health office has yet to receive a completed health certificate. The physical must have been performed after September 1, 2019. This is a requirement for all students if they are in person or virtual.

A physical exam is mandatory because the District must: (1) appropriately assess the student's current health status; (2) determine the student is free from contagious diseases and fit to participate in all aspects of school programming; (3) identify any need for the District to modify its programming in consideration of your child's health needs; and (4) secure any necessary health care supports within the school environment.

Please submit a copy of a physical exam completed by your child's health care provider by May 10th, 2021

Quarantine Information:

The school district works in conjunction with the Department of Health for contact tracing when there is a school exposure this is the process:

* Parents who have children that are identified as a direct contact will be notified by the district.

* Parents will receive an email with instructions on what to do daily for 14 days as well as the official quarantine notification from the Department of Health.

* Parents will receive a daily text message with the Quarantine Questionnaire for the full 14 days to monitor symptoms per the Department of Health Guidelines. This is in addition to the daily questionnaire that must also be answered.

* If you have any questions please contact your building nurse and they can help you.

The Department of Health had changed their quarantine guidelines:

  • a negative test does NOT release you from quarantine.
  • It is essential to wait 10 days full days to make sure that no infection appears, even if you have no symptoms, before being released from quarantine.
  • Quarantine should last 10 days from the last exposure to a person with known COVID-19.
  • In addition, you will continue to monitor yourself for any signs or symptoms of COVID-19 for up to 14 days after that last exposure.
  • If you exhibit any one symptom during the quarantine period your quarantine will be extended for the full 14 days- (this is a Department of Health requirement)

ILLNESS:

Parents/families need to continue to follow the illness guidelines that have been put in place by NYSDOH.

* Your child must stay home if they have any ONE symptom that is outlined in the COVID toolkit.

* You must have your child evaluated by their medical provider and have a doctor's note or a negative COVID test- This MUST be submitted to the building nurse prior to the student entering the building.

* Your child must stay home if anyone in the home is waiting for test results. Please discuss with your building nurse if there are any questions or see the previous guidance the district sent out about routine testing for employment or college-age children.

Visitors at the High School

For the safety and wellbeing of everyone, visitors will not be permitted inside of the high school during the academic day, when school is in session.

Parents wishing to pick up students, or drop off items for students, should use the intercom at the main entrance of the building. Our staff in the main office will guide you through the appropriate procedures.

Meetings between parents and staff will be expected to be conducted in a virtual format. In cases where a face-to-face meeting may be required, staff will need the permission of the building principal.

Visitors approved to enter the building, by the principal, will complete a health screening, have their temperature taken, and will wear a mask.
