Future Ready

This year, we are beginning our MyCAP (Middle School College, Career, and Civic Readiness) work at Overlook. MyCAP is about helping students begin to see where school can take them understanding their strengths and interests, exploring possibilities for the future, and developing their voice and sense of responsibility in their community.

A big part of this work is building transferable skills, skills students can use in school, in future careers, and throughout their lives. We will focus on self-advocacy, communication, collaboration, self-management, problem-solving, and perseverance.

These skills will spiral throughout middle school. In 6th grade, students will be introduced to each skill and learn what it means. In 7th grade, they will develop the skills by practicing them in more complex situations. In 8th grade, students will apply the skills more independently across academic, social, and future situations. The goal is to help students build skills they can carry with them long after they leave Overlook.

We are also making the most of our half days by using them as opportunities for students to learn and practice these skills through MyCAP lessons. On Wednesday, we had our first MyCAP lesson focused on Self-Advocacy. Ask your child about it! What does self-advocacy mean? When might they need to advocate for themselves?

We’re excited to use these opportunities to help students build the skills they need to be future ready.

The Health Office is down to one pair of girls’ shorts for students who may need a change of clothing during the school day. If you’re cleaning out closets this fall, please consider donating a few gently used jeans, shorts, or sweatpants.

Thank you!
