School News and Updates School News and Updates

It's Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week! It's Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week!

We are two days in to our Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week! Yesterday, teachers and staff enjoyed a catered breakfast and were gifted a beautiful signed thank-you banner from the Ross community. This morning, students brought an abundance of flowers to keep the week's celebration going, and a parent and students filled the staff lounge with snacks and drinks. Teachers and staff will continue their week with a happy hour, catered lunch, gift cards and Ross gear to celebrate their contributions to our school and the Ross community. Thank you to everyone who brought in flowers today!

End-of-Year Teacher/Staff Gifts End-of-Year Teacher/Staff Gifts

As we do each year at Ross toward the end of the year, Room Parents will soon begin collecting funds to purchase gift cards for the teachers in our classroom and a few staff members who have been assigned to each classroom. This is totally optional, and if you give, you are welcome to give whatever amount works for your family. (Families typically give a total of $50-$100 to be divided among the teachers/staff, with some giving less and some giving more; it's totally up to you!) Please watch your inboxes/classroom chats for more information.

LSAT Elections LSAT Elections

Seeking Nominations: Ross Elementary School LSAT Parent/Guardian (SY25-26)

The Ross Local School Advisory Team (LSAT) is currently seeking nominations for parents/guardians of current Ross Elementary School students to serve in school year 2025-2026.

The LSAT is a group of parents/guardians, teachers, non-instructional staff members, community members, and occasionally students who meet monthly to advise the principal on school priorities. A diversity of perspectives and experiences is important to a successful LSAT experience, as we want to make sure our school leaders hear from a variety of voices that are representative of the overall school community.

Parents/Guardians will nominate and then vote on 4 representatives. You may nominate as many individuals as you would like, as well as self-nominate, but please try to confirm others' interest in advance. Nominations and elections for the teachers and non-instructional staff members are handled by the union representatives. Community members and student representatives are asked to join by consensus once the other LSAT members are determined. The nomination form is available here.

Ross Elementary School's nomination period will be from May 6, 2025, to May 27, 2025. Afterward, we will share additional communication detailing how to vote. Thank you!

Pride, Poetry, & Plastics Workshop with Storytelling w/Saris: Fri, 5/16, 5:30 pm Pride, Poetry, & Plastics Workshop with Storytelling w/Saris: Fri, 5/16, 5:30 pm

zoom_out_map

Join Moms Clean Air Force this Friday, May 16, from 5:30 to 7:00 pm for their "Pride, Poetry, & Plastics Workshop with Storytelling with Saris":

We're excited to join Storytelling with Saris for the launch of World Pride in DC with a workshop focused on the disproportionate impacts of climate change and sea level rise on the LGBTQ+ community. Join us for an evening of art, pride, poetry writing, plastics education, and a light dinner.

This year's theme is the Fabric of Freedom, and saris are a particularly sustainable garment, traditionally made of cotton or silk, passed down from generation to generation within families. Unfortunately, many types of clothing today are now made from plastic-based products and petrochemicals like polyester, creating a cycle of fast fashion. These materials are derived from fossil fuels and are bad for our health and warm the climate.

This workshop will empower each of us to use art as a form of advocacy as we write poetry and make art on the saris inspired by the courage and rich history of the LGBTQ+ community who are disproportionately impacted by climate change.
