WMS LEADERSHIP TEAM
Assistant Principal ~ Rachel Langberg
Hey, Y’all!
If I told you that we could only go on Spring Break if a WMS Teacher hit the drum at the same time of the drum beat in the Whitney Houston song I Will Always Love You, which staff member would you nominate for the challenge?!
We nominate Mr. Yamnitz….Let’s see how he does in this video clip. Yay! He did it! Don’t worry if you nominated Mr. Wackwitz. We’d still get to go on break! Annnnd, if you nominated Ms. Flanagan, you’d be right, too!
No matter what, though, we all get to go on Spring Break! Annnnnd, we hope you have the best one yet. A couple of things we want to remind you about before we close out 3rd quarter:
THANK YOU!
It’s always such a joy to see your students learning in their classrooms, socializing at lunch and in the hallways, and helping out their peers!
We very much appreciate your partnership, and LOVE supporting your child during their time West!
4th quarter is a time to show what you’ve learned this year!

COUNSELING/MENTAL HEALTH
WMS Families,
Q3 is just about in the books and plans are being made for Spring Break and for the last 9 weeks of school! Historically, Q3 presents the most challenges for students: waning academic stamina, wandering focus, time management (Spring sports are starting back up) and sometimes an apathy towards the daily grind. There is a silver lining here though! As students become more reflective about what worked academically and what needs to change for Q4, continue the discussion at home using a few of these talking points:
If your child rarely had homework and demonstrated consistently strong habits and pro-social skills:
- Spend 15 minutes nighty to Review and Plan Ahead
- Be a “study buddy” for a friend
- Join a new club/sport/activity for the Spring!
If your child had missing assignments:
- Review the weekly grades email they send you each week from their Advisory class – can the emails now include any missing assignments? (Not getting emails? This is expected of all students, please discuss!)
- Homework Club is Mon-Thurs from 3:45PM-4:45PM in the Commons – make a plan for them to stay twice per week, or make plans to work with an individual teacher.
If your child struggled with homework taking 2+ hours each night:
- Contact your child’s Counselor and the class Teacher. Middle School is about learning academic strategies and developing positive relationships with self and others. Mental Health is important – let’s find a balance between academics and personal health!
If your child exhibits any atypical behaviors to stress (not sleeping, extreme anger, substance use, self-harming behaviors, etc.):
- Take all signs seriously and contact your child’s Counselor, mental health professional or 911 immediately!
- Visit a free walk-in clinic: https://coloradocrisisservices.org/
- Concerned about a friend? Contact Safe2Tell https://safe2tell.org/
- Utilize free therapy during the school day with Hazel Health: https://getstarted.hazel.co/district/cherrycreekschools

CLINIC
Please check in with your student to ensure they're prepared for each school day. Now's the time to make changes to habits, if needed!
- Nutrition - we are seeing many students in the clinic feeling unwell, which may be due to not eating enough during the day
Student should eat breakfast, lunch, and little snacks every 2-3 hours
If your student is supposed to eat lunch at school please review the menu with them and what they had to ensure they are eating during the school day
Hydration - one of the most common reasons for clinic visits are headaches due to dehydration
Students should carry a water bottle with them during the school day, taking sips of water from the fountain each day is not enough to keep students hydrated
If you need resources to receive a water bottle please contact the WMS clinic and we will happily provide your student with a water bottle
Backpacks - we are seeing student with back pain and headaches due to heavy backpacks
Check in with your student to see how heavy their backpacks are
Go through your students backpack with them to remove any unnecessary items
Encourage your student to use their locker during the school
WMS FOOD PANTRY
Hello West Families,
We are excited to share that West is launching a school food pantry to help support our families.
Thanks to a district grant, we have received a supply of shelf-stable food items and are grateful for the opportunity to continue assisting those who may need a little extra support.
The pantry provides pre-packed bags with items such as ramen, soup, canned vegetables and fruits, pasta, and other non-perishable foods. If your family would benefit from receiving a food bag, please complete the form below so we can connect with you.
To access other food resources like fresh vegetables and perishable items, or to see how you can support our district food supply please follow the link below.
THANK YOU PTCO
We also want to take a moment to thank PTCO for supporting our 8th Grade Character Development. Recently, our 8th graders participated in an assembly led by students from the Future Business Leaders of America at Cherry Creek High School. While they shared great examples of student leadership and involvement in high school, they also provided our students with practical financial advice, including the importance of saving, making thoughtful spending choices, and building habits that set them up for success in the future.
This presentation tied directly into the character development work we focus on with our 8th graders as they prepare for high school and beyond. We are incredibly grateful to PTCO for helping support opportunities like this that give our students real-world skills and inspiration for their next steps.

However, the Transportation Department recognizes that circumstances may arise, e.g. a family emergency, parents out of town, etc., when a student needs to ride home with another student on a one-time only basis. The student must get off at the assigned stop of the student they are riding with (no exceptions).
Make sure to fill out and turn in the linked Permission Slip to the Campus Admins office no later than 9:00 AM on the requested ride date. Forms can be printed and handed to the Campus Admins Assistant. Hard copies of the form can be picked up from the Campus Admins office if they are needed but must be picked up prior to the day they need to ride a different bus. No emails will be accepted.
