Principal's Memo

JMS Parents and Families,

We have officially moved into the second half of the 2024-25 school year! One of the things I am most proud of is the opportunities we have been able to give to JMS students this year, some of which are highlighted below. Thank you so much for your ongoing support!

Sincerely,

AVID Elective for 2025-26 AVID Elective for 2025-26

Attention current 6th and 7th grade students and families: This month we will begin accepting AVID Elective applications for the 25-26 school year.

Is AVID right for YOU?

AVID is a regularly scheduled WIN class that prepares students with high academic potential for success in college.

An AVID Student...

  • Has the desire and determination to succeed in school and a career

  • May currently be earning B’s and C’s in classes

  • Wants to be challenged in school with support

  • Might be the first person in their family to go to college one day

  • Might be a multilingual learner

  • May desire an “AVID Family” support system

  • Could benefit from guidance at school to become college-ready

What are AVID student expectations?

AVID students are expected to enroll in rigorous college preparatory classes, maintain an absolute minimum of a “C” average, and be leaders on their campus.

What happens in the AVID class?

  • AVID students are supported in high-level academic skills in writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, reading and academic behaviors.

  • Students are equipped with skills such as note taking, studying, test-taking, and goal setting.

  • Students receive academic support from adult tutors through collaborative groups and are motivated to pursue academic excellence through cultural and college field trips, classroom guest speakers, and AVID team building.

To apply to be an AVID student, please read the letter and complete the AVID Elective Application attached below:

We have begun collecting pledge forms from all participating students. The Reading Log Week 1 forms are due to advisors on Wednesday, February 5th. Remember, the grade level after each week that has read the most pages will get a grade-level reward. The Week 1 grade level reward will be announced on the JMS News on Monday, February 3rd. Also, individual participants will be eligible for prizes.

  • It’s not too late for students to participate in the JMS Read-a-Thon. Students can join the Read-a-Thon by completing their pledge form AND turning in their first week’s reading tracking slip this Wednesday, February 5th, during advisory. Students can join any time during the Read-a-Thon, just fill out the pledge form and start reading.

    • Week 2 Reading Log Due Wednesday, February 12th

    • Week 3 Reading Log Due Wednesday, February 19th

    • Week 4 Reading Log Due Wednesday, February 26th

  • 📚Reading offers countless benefits for middle school students. It improves their vocabulary, comprehension, and writing skills, while also enhancing their ability to think critically and creatively. Through reading, students gain a deeper understanding of the world around them, develop empathy by exploring diverse perspectives, and increase their academic performance across all subjects. Furthermore, fostering a love of reading at this stage is crucial in developing lifelong learners and empowered, engaged citizens.
