Did You Know...
This past school year, the Akron and Holyoke School Districts partnered with Northeast BOCES and Northeastern Junior College to offer a CDL program to senior students. To make the program more affordable and sustainable, the school district purchased a semi and trailer this summer with funds secured through the Rural CoAction Grant and Opportunity Now Grant secured through Northeast BOCES. These grant funds have been instrumental in helping support schools in building career pathways and supporting students. The semi is a 2018 International, and Pioneer Distribution is donating the trailer. Upgrades and wrap to the trailer are being funded through the
grant. The CDL program will support Akron students and students from neighboring
school districts in the NE BOCES. The district feels very fortunate to have the support
for this program through NE BOCES and Northeastern Junior College. This year’s NJC
instructor is Phil Sims, who brings a wealth of experience and is well-known in our area.
The district is additionally grateful to Pat O’Neil who was a great help in finding the semi
and for the donation of the trailer. The hope and plan in building out these type of pathways is
that rural schools can build different career avenues and then be able to support students
throughout the BOCES.
