Chelsea Center Mercy Hospital Clinical Field Experience Course

The Chelsea Center’s partnership with Mercy Hospital is providing meaningful, long-term job shadowing opportunities for students interested in healthcare. During the 2025-2026 school year, the Chelsea Center has been piloting our Mercy Hospital Clinical Field Experience course, and we are pleased to announce that we will again be able to offer that course in the Fall semester of 2026. Enrolled students have the opportunity to shadow medical professionals for 40 hours as Team Chelsea supports their experiences through reflection, analysis, and experimentation. Each week students produce a deliverable that captures progress toward goals; by the end of the course, students have curated authentic experiences and products that not only bring them joy but also set them apart in college and professional interviews.

Says one student, “I’m learning about roles in the hospital and what all goes into the jobs. It has been a great experience so far!” Says another, “I am becoming a better communicator when I am pushed out of my comfort zone. The staff is also very helpful when explaining the procedures and how the different parts work together. This is definitely helping me expand my knowledge.”

Angela Novak, Director of Nursing Excellence at Mercy Hospital, shared, “The talent of the Webster Groves Chelsea Center students is exactly what is needed in healthcare.” A huge thank you to Chrissa Borick, Supervisor of Clinical Program Management at Mercy, for matching students’ specific medical interests with placements across the hospital.

We’re grateful for this partnership and proud of our students as they explore future careers in healthcare. Students interested in taking this class next fall should email Patrick Bommarito at bommarito.patrick@wgmail.org.

Summer Opportunities Reminder

Summer school through the Chelsea Center is part of the WGHS summer school program, but has a different operations model. We offer our standard internship, independent service learning, passion pursuit, and travel credit courses. But additionally, the Chelsea Center offers the opportunity for students to pair attendance at a chosen regional summer experience with goal setting, engagement with three assignments, and reflection. Together, the experience and the reflective coursework create the eligibility for WGHS academic elective credit to be earned. In many cases the Chelsea Center can sponsor the cost of the experience. See last week's newsletter (linked below) for a listing of regional experiences; students may access details through their GivePulse accounts.

The general process for Chelsea Center summer school registration is:

  1. Student registers interest in the chosen experience on GivePulse (see us if assistance is needed)

  2. Student comes to the Chelsea Center to receive our paper summer registration packet

  3. Student takes the packet home, then returns it with parent/guardian signatures

This process for requesting coordination and funding for a regional experience must be completed no later than March 25, 2026. Arrangements for Chelsea Center standard internship, independent service learning, passion pursuit, and travel credit courses must be finalized no later than May 1.

A+ Program Reminder: We can help students who are pursuing their A+ hours find connections to service learning that include the mentorship or job shadowing components the A+ program requires. Have your students stop by to talk with us, or independently explore their GivePulse account opportunity listings at wgsd.givepulse.com.
