April Message from Clara Kang

Dear Baylis Families,

We started March by ending our February Kindness Month with our Student Council Come and Connect Events in the mornings. Our students volunteered to write thank you cards for school community members, such as security personnel, custodial staff, school monitors, and bus drivers. We had a wonderful turnout and the best part of it was that students came together as a cross-grades team for a great cause. We ended our month gathering together to watch the cereal box domino challenge. Our Baylis Bengal started it off and we saw it end with a ball rolling into a goal post thanks to our creative phys. ed. team. Thank you to the PTA for teaming up with us to start a new tradition and for dropping off these cereal boxes at the local St. Edward's Food Pantry!

As part of our Music and Art in our School's Month, we had special visitors stop by on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th. The Syosset Bagpipe Players are made up of our very own teachers from HBT MS, Southwoods MS, and Syosset High School. They stopped by every elementary school for the first time and paraded through our hallways filling it with such a festive spirit. We thank the teachers from Syosset for providing such a golden opportunity to see and hear these unique instruments.

The Day of Play required labor-intensive planning from our staff. However, it was well worth the hard work! Our students enjoyed our assembly, which included a whimsical fantasy skit about how to play like a champ even if there is losing involved. Our teachers took on fictional roles as Candyland pieces to bring the board game and skit even more alive. We ended it with a schoolwide rock, paper, scissor game where one of our third graders won against me.

The Day of Play had our hallways sprawling with life-sized board games and every class had a chance to participate in it as a session. There were more choices this year as the students were divided amongst two grades of teachers: K/1, 2/3, and 4/5. All of the sessions that took place inside the classrooms were based on our students selecting them prior to it. We concluded our Day of Play by celebrating our classroom door contest winners for each hallway the following week. Everyone participated in this voting process. The door winners were: Mrs. Trotta (K/1 hallway), Mrs. Pellicone (2/3 hallway) and Mrs. Digenakis (4/5 hallway). Each hallway door winner received a Candyland board game. Please click on the Baylis Day of Play picture above in the upper right hand corner to see all of our creative and amazing doors as a presentation.

Please check out the Looking Forward Dates at the end of this newsletter. It includes the big events that are coming up, which you may want to participate in. Some of them are grade specific, but our Field Day will be for all grades. It will be a special one-day event with an allocated rain date.

The kindergarten scientists studied force and motion in a unit titled Push, Pull, Go. Students showed great curiosity as they inquired all about how things move. They worked with partners to build ramps and swings to experiment with both force and motion. They also set up domino runs as another way to watch force and motion in action. Students had a ball exploring force and motion throughout this unit while using their engineering and problem-solving skills. This hands-on unit was a blast!

The first graders have been busy during Writing Workshop! We started by writing All About Me books, sharing our favorite things and special memories. Then, we became researchers! Using PebbleGo, we explored fascinating facts about animals and created our very own nonfiction books. The boys and girls worked hard to include important text features, such as a glossary and an About the Author page. Stop by and see our amazing work—we are proud to be authors!

Read Across America Week

Read across America is an exciting celebration of reading that happens every year around March 2nd, on Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Established by the National Education Association in 1998, this special day aims to get kids excited about reading, and the Baylis library is proud to participate every year! Throughout the week, students are encouraged to explore new books and authors. There are storytime sessions, fun activities, and engaging events that help foster a lifelong love of reading!
