Las Posadas in Spanish III

Student Spotlight: Jenna Hanlon
Approximately 360 cheerleaders and dancers from the across US participated in the London New Years Day parade and week long Universal Cheerleaders Association event. We only had one practice together prior to our parade performance. I met and have been keeping in touch with other cheerleaders from all over the US including California, Oklahoma, Minnesota and Washington.
The flight was about 7.5 hours long.
Our hotel was located right next to the Tower Bridge (which many people mistakenly call London Bridge) ***see picture***
We were able to visit the Tower of London, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Windsor Palace, St. Paul’s Cathedral (where Prince Charles and Princess Diana were married) Harrods Department Store (where clearance shoes were $475) and St. George’s Chapel where Queen Elizabeth II is buried as well as where Harry and Meghan were married. We used the public transportation system and rode double decker buses and the underground (subway). ***see picture***
My favorite part was visiting Borough Market. Borough Market is like a much larger version of Findlay Market There were foods and drinks from all around the world! ***see picture***
After leaving London we traveled by train to Cologne, Germany where we saw the Cologne Cathedral (***see picture***). Construction started on the cathedral in 1248 and in 1880, it finally opened. It was also one of the only structures not destroyed during the bombing during WWII. It was beautiful! We were fortunate enough to be in the cathedral when a service was starting and even were able to hear the massive organ play a few hymns.
Also in Cologne, we were able to experience a true German Christmas market. Along the border were many different shops containing handmade products, artisans, and foods. In the center of the Christmas market was a large ice skating rink and a giant shuffleboard game on ice. This Christmas market was so amazing that we even decided to go back on our second night in Cologne.
From Cologne we traveled again by train to Amsterdam. There we visited the Anne Frank house, where were able to visit the “Secret Annex” where Anne and her family hid from the Nazis. We were also able to view the actual diary Anne Frank wrote. It was a very somber place and a reminder of the mistakes in the past.
My favorite city was London.
My favorite food was the bratwurst that I had in Cologne at a Christmas Market.
My favorite transportation was the double decker bus used as public transit all throughout London and its surrounding areas.
