Week 3
August 25 - August 29, 2025
Stay Informed
Dear Students, Parents, and Multnomah Community,
Our teachers kicked off the week strong! They posted on Class Dojo what students will be engaged in for the week, and boy is there a lot happening! Parents, please make sure you are checking for each post on Mondays and using that as a tool for conversations with your child(ren) about what they are learning. If you are not connected to your child's class, please reach out to your child's teacher and do that as soon as possible.
Rather than asking, "how was your day?" Which often is followed by a "good," and end of conversation, lead with, "did you work on ... (whatever the teacher mentioned they would be doing)? Tell me more about that? What did you find easy about the assignment? Was there something that was more difficult? Is there something we can do at home to help with that?
When we show students we care deeply about what they are doing in school, away from us, they might be a little more invested on that task. We will have an incredible year. But it will require home-school connections and partnerships. We're in this together. š
Remember, Mondays is also when we usually send correspondences home. So it is very important that you check backpacks on Mondays.
In Partnership,
Principal Melgar
LGBQT+ Books/Stories
You will be receiving this letter on Monday the 25th.
This communication is to inform you that parents/legal guardians/educational rights holders (āParentsā) have the right to inspect instructional materials. A list of all classroom library materials the District shares with all elementary schools may be found at https://tinyurl.com/StorybookList.
Schools may also purchase additional books for classroom libraries; please contact your school principal for more information about classroom libraries or if you would like to request to inspect the instructional materials of your childās class.
LAUSD is committed to fostering an educational environment grounded in equity, belonging, and inclusivity, where all students see themselves and their communities reflected in the curriculum. While upholding this commitment, the District recognizes its obligation, pursuant to recent Supreme Court ruling (Mahmoud vs Taylor), to inform parents/guardians of any legally mandated opt-out provisions applicable to storybooks used during ELA instruction.
This recent Supreme Court decision also gives parents the right to receive notice of elementary school English Language Arts instruction that includes storybooks with LGBTQ+ themes. A parent/legal guardian/educational rights holder who, based on religious beliefs, does not wish their elementary school child to participate in English Language Arts storybooks with LGBTQ+ themes may make a request in writing to the school to opt out their child from this instruction.
This request will be honored for the school year in which it was submitted. Students whose parents opt out of this instruction will be offered an alternative activity of similar educational value.
Parents with questions may contact may reach out to me (principal).
Grandparents Day
Postponed
Our annual Grandparents Day celebration has grown substantially, so we know how important this day is for our community. I had scheduled it for Friday, September 5th. However, given the huge turnout every year, our current heat wave situation, and our small Multipurpose room, I have no choice but to postpone the event until the weather gets better.
I understand this announcement might be disappointing. Please know that we fully intend to host a Grandparents Day event. But we want to make sure it's comfortable and not a health risk to anyone involved.
A new date is forthcoming. Thank you for your understanding in helping us relay this message to all of our amazing grandparents!
Scholastic Book Fair
August 25-28
Students will visit the book fair with their teachers at the times in which the teachers' signed up. Please check the schedule here so you know when to send money or the ewallet. The book fair is also open after school.
- Monday, 8/25 2:30-3:30
- Tuesday, 8/26 1:30-2:30
- Wednesday, 8/27 2:30-3:30
- Thursday, 8/28 3:30-4:50
Technology Norms
Thank you to parents who have already signed and returned the RUP. Friendly reminder to discuss and review the content of the responsible usage policy. I want to share the Technology Norms here that will be posted in each class. Please review them with your student(s).
During our behavior assembly, I did inform the students that the devices they are using at school were purchased by the school and we are issuing it to them for instructional usage. If they should damage the device, they will be responsible for paying for the replacement. Help us prolong the life of our devices.
Where to Wait
Valet services will be available before and after school for grades 1-5 students at the main gate.
If you are walking up to pick up or drop off your child, please wait on the left side of the main gate. Please do not stand on the valet side as it makes it difficult for students to make their way to the waiting cars.
The right side should always be clear.
Plesae avoid doing any of the following:
*Do not make a U-Turn anywhere in front of the school after you drop off your child.
*Do not double park and leave your vehicle unattended.
*Do not double park and beckon/honk at your child to come you.
*Do not double park and let someone out of the car to retrieve your child.
*Do not loiter in the middle of traffic. Please be considerate.
Everyone has somewhere to be and SAFETY is KEY.

Heat Advisory
This week we have been keeping the students indoors for recess/lunch breaks due to the extreme heat. The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for Los Angeles County through the weekend.
Next week, we are taking extra precautions to protect students, including limiting outdoor activities, ensuring cooling units are in place, and encouraging hydration, sun protection, and breathable clothing.
Please encourage your child to bring their reusable water bottles. We have a water filling station right by rooms 8 and 9.
Google in the Classroom
If you have already signed the consent form on the Parent Portal, thank you! This year, the district is requiring that every parent log onto the Parent Portal to approve or deny student' Google Access. That is the easiest and quickest way. Please read over the disclosure and decide if you agree or disagree for consent and then type in your name.
Steps:
- Log into your parent portal app on your phone or click here.
- Click on student menu.
- Click on Student Google Consent.
- Scroll to the bottom.
- Click yes (first one) if you give consent. OR click no (second one) if you don't.
- Type in your name.
- Hit submit.
Coloring Books
If you are able and willing, please donate color books, mandalas, word searches, sudoku, and other consumable books that students might use for recess as a socializing pastime. You can often find them at the entry of every Target or the Dollar Tree.
