The Talking Stick: A Lesson in Culture and Respect

Thanks to a generous grant from the Roller Nation Foundation, author Julie Niblett visited Mrs. Davis’s second grade classroom for a special reading and cultural lesson. Ms. Niblett shared her book The Talking Stick, a story based on a real student she once taught—a Native American boy who was teased for having long hair. In the story, the boy uses a talking stick to help his classmates learn about his heritage and the importance of respect.

After reading the book, Ms. Niblett shared her own talking stick with the students and guided them in using it during a classroom discussion. As a parting gift, she presented the class with a signed copy of her book and materials to create their own talking stick, encouraging continued learning and respectful dialogue.

Students Shine at the Special Olympics

Mrs. Yarnevich and Ms. Hipple’s classes had an amazing time representing Steelton-Highspire at the Special Olympics, held at Central Dauphin High School on October 16th! Despite the chilly and windy weather, students gave it their all, competing in three events each and showing incredible teamwork and spirit. They even enjoyed reconnecting with some of our former students who now attend other schools!

🔥 Fire Safety Comes to Life for Our Youngest Rollers! 🔥

Students in grades K–2 had an exciting and educational visit from the Steelton and Highspire Fire Departments last week! Firefighters joined forces to teach our youngest learners about fire safety and prevention, including what to do in case of an emergency, how to safely exit a building, and the importance of having a family escape plan. Students loved exploring the fire trucks, meeting real firefighters, and even trying on some gear! We’re grateful to our local heroes for taking the time to make fire safety fun, memorable, and meaningful for our students.
