An End of Year Letter from Mrs. Zaccarine

Dear Woodrow Wilson Elementary Families,

As we move through June and prepare the close of another school year, I remain grateful for your continued partnership. With your support at home, our students are getting to school more often this year. We have had a year of growth and had lots of fun GLOWing.

Save the date for Tuesday, September 1st for School Supply Drop Off. We will have this during the morning hours and Theodore Roosevelt will have theirs in the afternoon. We hope this helps families having this in the same day. The calendar, along with our welcome back letters and teacher placement letters will all be sent home late August. We work hard at placing our students with the best teacher for their needs and we appreciate your trust in this process. Class lists can already be found on our Website.

Report cards will be sent home on the last full day of school, which is Tuesday, June 23rd. Our final day of school is Thursday, June 25th and dismissal will be at 11:15 on that date as well as June 24th. Please look closely at the Important Dates, above, to make sure you have our days and times for events and school hours.

We hope your children enjoy the last few weeks of the year. We pack these full of final lessons for their grade level, review from the year, and activities that will keep them moving and smiling. We still have our Drama production, our Growth Parade, our 3rd Trimester celebration, a Spirit week, our 5th grade talent show, Field Day and Color Run, and our 5th grade Moving up ceremony. We hope to see you at some of these events. As a reminder, volunteers must be pre-signed up to volunteer on Field Day and Color Run.

Thank you, again, for all of the support you provided during this school year. I look forward to our continued partnership and wish all of our outgoing students a successful transition into middle school. I look forward to seeing you in those hallways and hearing about all of the great things you do at JFK. To our returning Woodrow students, have a safe summer. We will see you at the park or at school supply drop off.

Many thanks and wishes for a wonderful summer break,

Mrs. Zaccarine

G.L.O.W.ing in 2026 (Growing & Learning Our Way)

3rd Grade was Glowing and Now Next Year…4th Grade

Third grade has been a busy year. We take a look back at what third grade is all about. Third grade was quite a transition for many. Not only a new school, a new grade, but starting school earlier was a struggle for some. Students learned how to be more independent this year. We learned many reading techniques and strategies. They really began to read not only because they were asked, but also for enjoyment.

In June, Woodrow Wilson has many fun activities planned. There is sidewalk chalk day as well as the color run. We are ending the year with a wonderful field trip to Hidden Valley Animal Adventure . The best thing that the students are doing this year is raising painted lady butterflies in the classrooms. We were able to take the larva and follow it through all the life stages until we can release them outside at Woodrow Wilson. We were able to explore, observe and raise them in class.

As the year comes to an end and the nice weather approaches, the students will be able to enjoy the summer; they need to remember some things to do to prepare for 4th grade. They must review addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts and most importantly keep on reading!!!!!!!

4th Grade was Marvelous in May

It’s June?! May has been such a rewarding month for the 4th graders at Woodrow Wilson Elementary. The students are really showing what they have learned throughout the school year and what they know. They have become very independent and are asking higher level questions. In reading, we finished our poetry unit using the text, “Love That Dog.” The students really enjoyed learning about poetry and what it has to offer readers. We also learned about Women’s Rights. We learned about different people who have fought for the rights of women. In writing, we worked on some poetry and continued to make strong paragraphs in our writing. We made sure to have correct capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and complete sentences. In math, we learned about how decimals relate with fractions and learned about the tenths and hundredths place values. We also learned how to compare decimals, add decimals, and solve word problems with decimals. In social studies, we finished learning about what the immigration process was like through Ellis Island. In science, we started our “Powering Through the Fair” unit.

In June, we will continue to work hard in each subject area to end the school year on a strong note. In reading, we will take a look at the genre of historical fiction. We will read Number the Stars and discuss how the historical events were a reality for people during this time period, but the characters in the story are made up. We will look at how events in the real world impact a person or a character’s personal timeline. In writing and math, we will review what we have learned throughout the school year. In science, we will complete some fun experiments in our “Powering Through the Fair” unit.

We thank each of you for your ongoing support at home throughout the school year. Everything you do at home has helped us here in school in a tremendous way. Please remind your child to read for at least 20 minutes every day over the summer and practice their multiplication/division facts. We want your child to maintain all of their hard work this school year and be ready for fifth grade!

Fifth Grade: Finishing Strong and Glowing Bright!

We can’t believe how quickly May has flown by as we near the end of the school year. Students are trying to enjoy every moment of their fifth-grade year before it becomes a memory. Our fifth graders have grown tremendously, both intellectually and physically, and it has been a pleasure to watch them learn and mature throughout the year.

The fifth-grade students really enjoyed their field trip to the Bisons game. They were so excited, and for many of them, it was the first baseball game they had ever attended. Did you know that during the baseball season, from March through September, there are 75 home games? Attending a game is a great way to spend a summer afternoon or evening with family and friends.

Although our time with the fifth graders is quickly coming to an end, there is still so much fun ahead before the school year is over. Our Fifth Grade Class Day is coming up, and this year it ties in perfectly with Woodrow Wilson’s G.L.O.W. theme. We think the students are going to love it! They are also looking forward to the many exciting events and assemblies still to come.

As you can see, the fifth graders are finishing the year strong and continuing to make special memories at Woodrow Wilson. Over the summer, be sure to pick up a good book to enjoy while relaxing under a shade tree, at the beach, or on your porch. We wish all of our fifth graders the very best as they begin their middle school journey next year.

Leading The Way at Woodrow Wilson

Our Student Lighthouse members have been busy making a positive impact throughout the school these past few months. To help ease the nerves of their peers during testing, they created videos full of helpful tips and encouraging words to motivate everyone to do their best. During Teacher Appreciation Week, the students wrote meaningful sayings on stars that were delivered to teachers throughout the building. The teachers loved receiving these special messages and appreciated hearing how much they are valued by their students. Student Lighthouse leaders also took charge of the Talent Show auditions, carefully evaluating each act and providing thoughtful feedback. After much consideration, they decided that every performer was worthy of taking the stage in Woodrow Wilson’s Second Annual 5th Grade Talent Show.

Although the final Lighthouse meeting was held at the end of May, these student leaders are far from finished. They continue supporting the Talent Show as stage crew members, greeters, masters of ceremonies, and audio technicians. They are also leading the way in planning our final trimester celebration, contributing creative ideas to make it a spectacular end-of-year event that highlights everyone’s growth and achievements. We are incredibly proud of the leadership, dedication, and enthusiasm these students have shown and look forward to seeing the lasting impact of their efforts throughout the remainder of the school year.

General Music Room Updates:

Thank you to everyone who has made it a very successful year. We have played so much in the music room. Recorders will be going home very soon. Please keep them in a safe place to bring back in September.

A very special thank you to our choir and drama members who have had an amazing year of performing. We look forward to new music in September and even more fun!

Have a nice summer!

Updates in Physical Education

This month in Physical Education, our students have been working on a "bases unit" such as kickball, baseball, wiffleball, etc. We've explored various activities to improve our psychomotor, cognitive, and affective skills. During our bases unit, students have had the opportunity to practice their skills while developing both offensive and defensive strategies. They have also been introduced to different games and activities that they could do within the community to remain active. It’s been great to see the students grow in their sportsmanship and collaboration, as they support one another and work together.

Library June Highlights

Dear Parents,

As we wrapped up another wonderful school year, students enjoyed several fun and engaging library activities!

Author Research Project
Students became literary detectives as they completed an author study using biography books and online database articles. They researched a children's author, explored the author's childhood inspirations, discovered what made them successful, and created engaging Google Slides presentations to share their learning with classmates.

Free Summer Books!
To help keep students reading all summer long, we offered free books that were being removed from our library collection. Many students were excited to take home books to build their personal libraries and enjoy reading during the summer months.

Thank you for supporting your child's reading and learning throughout the year. We wish all of our families a safe, relaxing, and book-filled summer!

From the Band Room:

Congratulations to all of our Band Musicians who worked incredibly hard this year! Great work to the first-years for earning your way into After-School Band and making great progress on your instruments! To the 5th Grade Musicians: Fantastic work this year! I am so looking forward to continuing our progress next year at JFK!!

To those interested in joining the Band Program here at WW, please turn in the form that was sent home! If you misplaced yours, please reach out to Mr. Prutsman: tprutsman@cheektowagasloan.org

Remember: We may have school instruments available for rent! Please do not be deterred by the cost of renting through a local store!

From our Creation Station

We did it! We had a successful art show that was filled with lots of colorful artwork. We displayed our portraits, still life’s, landscapes and even some abstract work. Our year was spent learning new printing techniques, building sculptures, weaving with yarn and brushing up on our drawing skills with markers, colored pencils and oil pastels. Keep creating all summer long!
