Principal's Letter
Friday, October 16, 2026
Dear Hawk Families,
Happy Fall Break! Our students have been working exceptionally hard, and this four-day weekend is a well-deserved, well-timed opportunity for them to rest, recharge, and enjoy time with family and friends. I hope our Hawks get extra sleep, take a break from the daily routine, and come back ready to finish October strong!
While our students are enjoying the start of an extended four-day weekend, our teachers were hard at work today! Following Thursday’s early-release session focused on strengthening our Tier 1 instructional strategies, our staff spent today engaged in full-day collaboration with cross-district department and content area teams. Our educators consistently put in the time and care to refine their craft, align instruction, and deliver high-quality learning experiences for every student in our building.
Gratitude and Celebrations!
- Congratulations to Tejas Karumudi on being named a National Merit Scholar Semi-Finalist. Tejas was honored at our Board of Education meeting on Monday evening and is one of just 16,000 students earning this honor nationwide.
- On Wednesday morning, we celebrated our state-bound Girls Golf and Boys Tennis teams! Best of luck to Coach Nolan Hubbard and our Varsity Boys Tennis Team and Coach Beth Feuhrer and our Varsity Girls Golf Team as they prepare to compete at the MHSAA State Championship this weekend!
- Best of luck to the Forest Hills Field Hockey Team. They are competing in the first-ever MHSAA post-season and will be taking on Ann Arbor Pioneer on Monday, October 19th!
- On Wednesday, our school participated in The Apple Crunch! All staff and students were given an apple to enjoy during their 4th hour class. This district-wide event is done to support Michigan Farmers. A big thank you to the students and staff in our ASD classrooms for making apple deliveries to all classrooms in the school!
Policies and Procedures
Standard Response Protocol: Throughout the year, we conduct a series of safety drills. In conjunction with these ongoing safety drills, we are highlighting our second response to an emergency situation according to our Standard Response Protocol.
LOCKDOWN Locks, lights, out of sight. Lockdown: Students are trained to move away from sight, maintain silence, and not open the door. Adults and staff are trained to recover students from the hallway, lock the classroom door, and prepare to evade or defend. A Lockdown is only initiated when there is an active threat inside or very close to the building. The natural inclination for parents is to go to the school during a Lockdown. Understandable, but problematic. If there is a threat inside the building, law enforcement will be responding along with many other first responders. It is unlikely that parents will be granted access to the building or campus. Please refrain from coming to campus during a Lockdown. Please follow directions communicated by the district through district communication channels, such as SchoolMessenger. Do not rely on social media pages.
For more details about our Standard Response Protocol and our other actions, please visit our website. There, you'll find an overview of these actions along with a link to a flyer with information for parents. Thanks for partnering with us to keep our schools safe.
Monthly Progress Reports: Families will receive a monthly academic and attendance progress report on the afternoon of Friday, October 16th. We are sending these monthly progress reports home in an effort to improve family and student understanding of each child’s progress at school. In addition to your student’s up-to-date grades, the progress report will also reflect current attendance.
Attendance: The Kent ISD sets a 90% positive attendance threshold for students in Kent County. Students who fall below this threshold are considered “chronically absent” and may be subject to the truancy process. Today is the 35th day of the semester, so a student who has missed 4 or more days of school would fall under the Kent ISD definition of chronic absenteeism. There is so much research showing the connection between consistent school attendance and academic success. If there are extenuating circumstances impacting your child’s attendance, please reach out to our wonderful counseling team!
News and Notes
Our Student Section Leaders have organized a Go Green week to honor the legacy of their classmate, Luke Kooistra. At the home football game on 10/23, all of our students will wear green in memory of Luke. In the lead-up to the game, our student section leaders have organized a series of spirit days and a toy drive to honor Luke’s legacy and to benefit the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. Full information can be found here: Go Green Week Info
