5 Things to Know Weekly Update
October 19, 2026
Dear Colleagues,
I know some of you have been affected by recent fires and other related issues, so I hope all of that has resolved and that you and your families are safe. It’s a lot to deal with in addition to being in the thick of the semester, anticipating the holidays in November and December, and generally trying to keep our heads above water. I will say: we are doing a great job. 😊 One piece of evidence was the Transfer Fair/HBUHSD College Night last week, which had hundreds of students (and parents urging the high schools students to “go talk to them!”) participating. Great events take many people preparing for many hours, and these events went flawlessly – along with the Health Fair on the same day! So please congratulate yourselves for a job well done.

Despite my best intentions, I did miss the opening of the art show last week – it’s called Polyphony, featuring artists of Asian descent. So we all need to make time to visit the gallery soon. The hours are Wednesday-Friday, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. (or by appointment) and it runs until November 12. Our art shows are always very professional – let’s not miss this one!
Last Friday, I attended a meeting with community college presidents and chancellors at CSU Fullerton to discuss how to create better relations and transitions for our students. I have to applaud President Rodriguez from Coastline for bringing up the recent snafu where some math courses were being judged non-transferrable if testing was not in person (that issue has been corrected). CSUF was suitably apologetic and vowed to do better. They provided a snapshot of our transfer numbers that you can see below:
We wrapped up a very successful Hispanic Heritage Month last week, with many excellent events, and now we are moving on to further outreach to the Hispanic community with our car show on 10/24, Chrome for College. Make sure to gather up your children and come out for this event – there will be plenty for all ages! The planning committee has put in a lot of work preparing for the day – thank you very much to them! And I regret that I will NOT be able to make it since I will be traveling to DC for our Excelencia in Education project – so please take photos!
And thank you to Amanda Best for presenting at last week’s Patrons’ Lunch (now up to 99 members!) about upcoming non-credit art offerings as well as the annual art sale. Early warning to make time for the December art sale and get there fast to get the best choice of items – more details to come.
My week includes a presentation to Kiwanis on Tuesday, a Board meeting which will feature information about our CTE programs and plans, continued planning to have the Taste of Huntington Beach on campus in the spring (yay), and a variety of meetings to move a variety of initiatives forward. I will be out all of next week, so catch me soon if you need to.
Our GWC Chamber Singers and voice students performed Shake, Rattle, and Roll: The Birth of Rock on Sunday afternoon in Forum 2. The concert featured singers of all ages, which was especially fun to see, and celebrated the music that helped launch rock and roll in the 1950s. Many thanks to Dawn Brooks, all of our performers and everyone who helped make the concert possible!
