MWES Counseling Update
November 2023
Happy Fall!
I hope your family is doing well this month! I wanted to express my sincere gratitude to our families for their support of MWES. I count being a part of the MWES family as one of my biggest blessings! Happy Thanksgiving - I hope you enjoy time with family and friends as we get the opportunity to slow down even for just a day!
Classroom Counseling
Our school wide focus this month is gratitude - choosing to appreciate the people and things in our lives. My focus with counseling class has been to connect showing gratitude to our emotional/mental health. Research (great artile here) has shown that focusing on gratitude creates more optimism, which can also lead to other positive changes such as more attention to exercise and fewer visits to the doctor.
Each grade level will focus on looking at things we can be grateful for every day - even the small things! For a fun way to spark conversation, check out the wheel of gratitude!

Books on Gratitude
A Chair for my Mother
Vera Williams tells of a young girl who, along with her waitress mother, saves coins in a big jar in hopes that they can someday buy a new chair for their apartment, the kind of chair her mother deserves after being on her feet all day in the Blue Tile Diner. Into the jar also goes the money Grandma saves whenever she gets a bargain at the market.
The Family Under the Bridge
This is the delightfully warm and enjoyable story of an old Parisian named Armand, who relished his solitary life.
The Secret of Saying Thanks
Perhaps you'd like to know a secret, one of the happiest ones of all.
You will surely find it for yourself one day.
You'll discover it all on your own, maybe when you least expect it. If you've not yet discovered the secret of saying thanks, it's waiting for you. The secret can be found in the sunrise that offers promises full for the day ahead, or in the gentle shade of a tree sheltering you from the hot rays of the sun, or on the rock that offers rest from a long walk.
In the inspirational text that made him a bestselling, internationally acclaimed author, Douglas Wood offers a spiritual homage to nature and the world. Greg Shed's stunning portraits of the natural world tenderly portray all of the many ways in which we can say thanks for the wonders we sometimes take granted in life.
