October Student of the Month!
Each month, a senior is selected as the OHS Student of the Month based on their scholarship, citizenship, leadership, and involvement in co-curricular activities. The Student of the Month for October is Kay! Congratulations, Kay on this incredible achievement!
National Hispanic Heritage Month
The official 2026 theme for National Hispanic Heritage Month is “Unidos, Somos Más” (translating to "Together, We Are More").
The National Council of Hispanic Employment Program Managers selected the theme to emphasize unity, collective strength, and shared values. It highlights the diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities while calling for mutual support and community empowerment.
Notable Hispanic Figure in history:
Ellen Ochoa is a Mexican-American scientist, engineer, and former NASA astronaut. Born in 1958 in Los Angeles, California, she became the first Latina to travel into space when she flew aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1993. Ochoa completed four space missions and spent nearly 1,000 hours in space. She later became the first Hispanic woman and second woman to serve as director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center. Ochoa has received numerous awards for her achievements and continues to inspire students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
National Teen Driver Safety Week
October 18-24th is considered National Teen Driver Safety Week. This is a campaign led by the U.S. Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to raise awareness about teen driver crashes, inexperience, and safe driving habits.
Last week sophomores attended F.O.C.U.S. (what it stands for) at the Appleton PAC
MORE about what our students experienced from Kathy, Dani, or Crystal.
Did you know that teen drivers are more likely to be involved in a crash than any other age group? Everyone should do their part in keeping our roads safe by buckling up every time.
