DHS Vex Robotics ranked #1 in league

After four weeks of competition in the Fall Push Back League against 42 other teams in southeast Michigan, Davison is ranked #1 with a record of 8 wins and 4 losses.

VEX Robotics is a student-led program where the students handle the design, building, programming and competition of the robot. The competition is held on a 12x12 foot field, with four teams making two alliances; each match, the alliance will change. In the first 15 seconds of the match, the robots run in an autonomous mode with no driver input. After the autonomous mode, the drivers have an additional minute and 45 seconds to control the robots. The goal this year is to pick up cube-shaped pieces and place them into scoring zones.

This year, Team 12019A, "The Cards," is led by Mikey Arnold and includes Clapton Underwood, Annabelle Morrison, Tobijah Rosa, James Corolis, Mason Mitchell, Liam Randall and Paul Ritzert. The team has traveled to Notre Dame Preparatory School twice and once to Imlay City High School for competitions. The next event for "The Cards" will be at Kettering University on November 15 for the regional competition with teams from all across the state attending.

The season will wrap up on December 6 at Grand Blanc High School as the team defends its first-place position in the league and, hopefully, secures a spot in the state finals.

There's a new sports team in town at DHS

The term "evening the playing field" is about to take on more meaning for students at Davison High School where plans to host a Unified Basketball Team are underway.

Unified Sports, an inclusive program primarily through the Special Olympics, combines athletes with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team to train and compete. An informational meeting about the new DHS Unified Basketball team will take place from 6-6:45 p.m. Monday, November 17, in Room #202 at Davison High School.

"I couldn’t be more excited that our district is launching the Unified Sports program at DHS," said Davison Community Schools' Director of Special Education Ms. Dana Melaragni. "It’s such a powerful way for students and the community to connect, celebrate inclusion and uplift non-traditional student-athletes. Unified Sports truly changes lives by building leadership, friendship, and instilling a sense of belonging for everyone involved."

DHS Resource Room and LINKS Teacher Mrs. Daniyle Weir will serve as coach and director of the DHS Unified Sport program.

"I am incredibly excited to bring this opportunity to our students," Mrs. Weir said. "I firmly believe it will create an inclusive opportunity for students to jump into a sporting event who might not otherwise have the chance. By forming friendships through shared athletic experiences, students will learn to embrace differences and build a more accepting community."

Mrs. Weir added that the Special Olympics Unified Sports program:

  • will provide valuable social inclusion opportunities for all teammates to build friendships, on and off the playing field
  • integrate athletes with and without intellectual disabilities in a setting where all are encouraged to improve their skills and become physically fit.
  • prepare students for participation in other school activities or community sports programs.
  • strengthen self-esteem and confidence as students take on leadership roles and activities.
  • models genuine inclusion for the entire school community.
  • increases community awareness of the spirit and skills of individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Once the Unified Basketball team is established, there are plans to add a Unified Bowling team in the near future as well.

Hahn students get sweet surprise on World Kindness Day

Small notes of encouragement were placed on the lockers of each student at Hahn Intermediate Thursday, November 13, as part of World Kindness Day.

Members of the LINKS program placed the notes on the lockers "ninja style" so that they wouldn't be caught, said Kalsie Mathews, fifth grade Resource Room Teacher.

"Every student's locker had a small note left to help spread some kindness throughout the building," Ms. Mathews said.

Siple participates in Look for the Good Project

On Wednesday, November 12, the students and staff at Siple Elementary began participating in "Look for the Good® Project," a non-profit organization working to help create safe spaces where kids feel welcome and that they belong.

Over the next two weeks, Counselor Ms. Alexis Liley will be working with third and fourth grade STAR students in leading the event. Each day students read a message during the morning announcements that shares a suggestion for something they could express gratitude for that day. After the morning message is shared, students write something they are grateful for on colorful post-it notes. These notes are then posted to the school's Gratitude Wall.

"As we continue to work hard to promote kindness at Siple Elementary, I was thrilled to find the Look For The Good® Project," said Principal Mrs. Christy Flowers. "The students are being taught to look for the good that others are doing in small every day acts of kindness toward others. I wanted to bring this program especially for this activity. In a world where the news and social media often focuses on the negative, I wanted our young students to focus on looking for good, because it does exist."

In addition to the Gratitude Wall, there are Look for the Good® floor dots that are located in three different spots in the hallway. When someone stands on the dot, he or she is supposed to say something they are grateful for out loud.

The program also provides You Matter Cards. These orange cards were given to staff and the Star Student leaders on the first day of the program. They read, "Thank you for being an AWESOME HUMAN! The person giving you this card really appreciates something you did. Please pass this on when you see the good too!"

"So far, after only one day, we have received some of the most precious and kind gratitude notes on the wall," Mrs. Flowers said. "And the children are so excited to give the orange Look for the Good®

cards to staff and peers. I cannot wait to see how this impacts our school culture in the long run. I believe it will have a lasting impact in the lives of our Siple family!"

DHS/DAE October and November Students of the Month

Congratulations to the following Davison High and Davison Alternative Education students who have been named as Students of the Month for the months of October and November.

October Students of the Month

Freshman - Alivia Reece

Nominated by: Mrs. Gokey

Alivia arrives in class each day with a positive attitude and an eagerness to learn. She consistently puts forth her best effort on all assignments. What truly sets her apart is her kindness toward her classmates. Her infectious smile brightens the room, making her a wonderful presence in my classroom.

Sophomore - Valerie McMillan

Nominated by: Mrs. Johnson

Valerie is an exceptional student. She is kind, hard working and helpful. She has taken a new student, who is still learning English, under her wing and guided her through labs and discussion like a pro. I am continually impressed with the quality of her work and her ability to ask and answer questions, as well.

Junior - Mark Baldridge

Nominated by: Ms. Zimmer

Mark is seriously one of the nicest people I've met (not hyperbole!). He is so kind to everyone he comes in contact with -- his teachers, the students in our classroom, and in general when he is out and about. He always has a smile, NEVER grumpy, and will help in every way possible. Mark is the type of student who will actually put his phone in his backpack when asked and then wait attentively for instruction/work to start. He is a very busy person, plays competitive hockey, yet is very conscientious about his work, making sure he stays on top of everything while doing his best. This is my second time having Mark in class, and as he matures, he only becomes a better human.

Senior - Garrett Mitchell

Nominated by: Mr. Luebke

Every day, Garrett is always looking for a new opportunity to learn something new, along with helping his peers along the way. As an Auto II student placed in an Auto I class, he acts as a great model for the first year students. Garrett always goes above and beyond in class in order to not only learn himself, but to make sure his peers are getting the most out of every day in class. He starts every day with a positive attitude and he is always willing to help out around the shop and in the classroom. Garrett is the perfect example of doing the right thing, no matter what.

DAE - Mia Page

Nominated by: Miss Taylor Brooks

Mia is new to DAE this year, but she is a hard worker. Mia fell behind in her online class, but she really wanted to succeed. So we sat down and came up with a plan, and she was able to meet that goal. Mia always has a smile on her face, and I always see her being polite and saying good morning to her teachers. She is a student DAE should be proud to have and to see her grow.

November Students of the Month

Freshman - Maizee Green

Nominated by: Mrs. Crongeyer

Maizee is a strong student who sets an amazing example for her peers. She comes to class every single day ready to learn with a smile on her face. Her positive attitude is contagious and I often find that my mood is lifted when she walks into my class! Maizee puts maximum effort into everything she does in the classroom and her extra-curricular activities. I look forward to witnessing all that she accomplishes throughout her high school career. I know that she is going to achieve so many of her goals and represent Davison in such a positive way. I am so lucky to have Maizee in my class!

Sophomore - Aubrey Joubran

Nominated by: Mrs. Bailey

Aubrey is a fantastic student and an even better young person. She is so kind and considerate of others, she is quick to ask others to join her group or to help them in any way. She really cares about events going on in the world and tries her best to demonstrate the ideals in the Cardinal Code on a daily basis. She is also a responsible leader among her peers. She is not only focused on learning about history but she is also trying to understand the events happening in today's world and actively trying to figure out her role in that world. She is open to hearing other perspectives and supports her fellow students in class discussions and activities. I've found her to be a thoughtful and respectful young lady. Great job Aubrey! I love having you in class!

Junior - Gavin Tondreau

Nominated by: Mr. Maynard

I am writing to recommend Gavin Tondreau for the Davison High School Student of the Month. Gavin is a truly courteous and respectful individual. He interacts with both his peers and teachers in a manner that reflects his kind nature, creating a positive atmosphere in the classroom. Gavin consistently turns in assignments with a high level of commitment and attention to detail. His work is always thorough, reflecting his dedication to understanding the material and his desire to achieve excellence. Furthermore, Gavin always has a smile on his face and maintains a pleasant mood. His positive attitude is infectious and has a remarkable impact in my classroom.

Senior - Autumn Bell

Nominated by: Mr. Quertermous

I’m proud to nominate Autumn Bell for Student of the Month for truly exemplifying the Davison Cardinal Code. She was charged with the task of planning and helping Davison host a state-wide conference for Early College students. She was courteous and respectful while collaborating with peers and staff to plan the MEMCA Student Leadership Conference. Autumn was incredibly attentive to details, dependable in meeting deadlines, and consistently supportive of others throughout the planning process. Her leadership in organizing logistics and leading a networking breakout session reflected maturity, kindness and a genuine commitment to representing Davison with pride.

DAE - Luke Bishop

Nominated by: Mrs. Mobley

Luke is always actively engaged in class and participates, which can sometimes be difficult because the content is so difficult for students. He actively helps and engages other students and is willing to help anyone. He is kind, courteous, supportive of expectations, and shows good leadership capabilities. He has a calm presence, which makes him easily overlooked. He easily accomplishes tasks and continues to help with anything needed. Kudos Luke!

Have a student athlete? Please create an account with our new communication system

We are very excited to announce that the Davison Athletic Department has partnered with FinalForms, an online forms and data management service. FinalForms allows you to complete and sign athletic participation forms for your students, and register them as a student athlete. FinalForms saves data from season-to-season and year-to-year, meaning that you will never need to enter the same information twice!

FinalForms will also become a new communication portal for all coaches, making it simple for them to keep track of their team's data AND send out email and text communication to both student athletes and parents.

Once a parent has signed up with a FinalForms account and registered their student, coaches will have easy access to put that student athlete and parent in their group using the database that FinalForms creates for the Davison Athletic Department. This all starts with you creating your account.

This is for ALL parents/student athletes - Fall, Winter and Spring regardless if they are in a sport now or later. Attached are two tip sheets, one for Parent Account setup and one for registering your student.

Please see the tip sheets attached to get started.
