Avon Local Schools January 2024
January 2025
Superintendent's Message
Dear Avon Families,
Happy New Year! As we begin the second half of the school year, I want to express my sincere gratitude for the hard work and dedication of each of you.
January is School Board Appreciation Month, and we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our dedicated school board members. With the new year comes new leadership, and we are pleased to welcome our newest board member, Kate Perhay, along with our newly appointed Board President, John Weigman, and Vice President, Dennis Kramer. We also thank our continuing members, Christine Libeg and Tara Tatman, for their ongoing service. Thank you all for your exceptional leadership, dedication, and commitment to ensuring our district continues to provide the best possible education for our students.
As we look ahead to upcoming events, one to mark on your calendar is our annual Eagle Run, scheduled for May 23, 2026. This event brings our community together to promote healthy lifestyles while raising important funds for the Avon Schools Educational Endowment Fund, the French Creek YMCA, Avon/Avon Lake Community Resource Services (CRS), and other local charitable organizations. The Eagle Run is always a fun and meaningful event, and I encourage everyone to participate or support it in any way they can.
As the weather continues to change, I’d also like to offer a friendly reminder to please dress for the weather. Outdoor activities, including physical education classes and recess, are an important part of our students’ learning and development. To ensure students remain comfortable and safe, please be sure they wear appropriate layers, coats, and footwear to stay warm and dry.
Let’s start our third quarter with focus and positivity as we look hopeful to spring and all that lies ahead. Thank you for your continued support of our schools and for the important role you play in making our district a great place to learn, grow, and thrive.
Warm regards,
Superintendent
Safety Update
Avon Local Schools was awarded $18,985.32 for the Attorney General’s Safety Grant. This grant will allow the District to acquire safety materials, tools and training that supports both students, staff and community members. Possible safety materials may include cameras, access controls, communication tools and training for best practices and vulnerability scanning.
Financial Update
In December 2025, Governor DeWine signed multiple pieces of legislation focused on property tax reform. These new laws, along with the Lorain County Budget Commission’s expansion of the homestead and owner occupied tax credits, are expected to have an impact on Avon property tax bills. Treasurer Sadie Fox will present the district’s four year financial forecast and provide an overview of these changes at the February 17th Board of Education meeting. The meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m. and will be held in the Heritage South Media Center.
Highlights: What's Happening Around Our Schools
Community Outreach
It takes a village... an Eagle Village! Students, staff and local area groups came together to help take care of those just in time for the holidays. Thank you to Second Harvest Food Bank, Avon Middle School student council, Knights of Columbus, AHS National Honor Society, AHS football team and student/staff volunteers. Look what they did to provide for our community in need! A special thank you to Mrs. Byrson and Mrs. Eigenbrod for their tireless work in helping to provide assistance to those who need it most.
AMS: Real Money, Real World
AMS students recently participated in Real Money Real World, a financial literacy simulation developed by Ohio State University Extension that teaches students how to live on a budget. During the experience, students assumed the role of a 25-year-old adult. Each student selected or was assigned a career with a corresponding monthly salary and a family size of zero to three children.
After accounting for taxes, health insurance premiums, and retirement savings, students worked with their remaining net income. At a series of interactive booths, they made realistic monthly spending decisions and tracked their expenses in a check register. Students budgeted for essentials such as housing, utilities, food, transportation, insurance, clothing, child care (based on the number and ages of their children), communication, entertainment, and charitable giving.
As they visited each booth, students chose from various spending options and deducted costs accordingly. If they struggled to make ends meet, they had the option to consult a financial adviser. Regardless of whether they ended with a positive or negative balance, all students completed the simulation and reflected on their financial outcomes.
Through Real Money Real World, AMS students gained a better understanding of the difference between wants and needs, the importance of budgeting, and how education level can impact future earning potential.

School Closures
Reminder
With the weather changing, we want to take this time to remind our families of our procedure when it becomes necessary to close Avon Schools due to inclement weather or other causes.
Below is how you will be alerted:
Email and Automated Phone Messages will be sent to all guardians of the students affected by the closure
District website is updated on the home page with school(s) affected by the closure
School closings via text messages to parents, students and staff who have signed up to receive text messages through SchoolMessenger
If you have not yet signed up to receive text messages through SchoolMessenger but would like to, you can participate in this free service just by sending a text message of “Y” or “Yes” to our school's short code number, 67587.
Our goal is to notify as early as possible so parents can make a plan. The decision to close school is typically made between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m.
Please note that the automated phone messaging system can be used for different types of emergency notifications, so always be sure to listen to the message when it arrives.
