Principal's Message

Dear Parents/Guardians,

It is hard to believe that I am writing this to you with only one full week of school remaining for the 22-23 school year. It was a very exciting week at school, as we had the Boosterthon going in full force all five days, with the culminating "Fun Run" on Friday. This year we did things a little bit differently due to the impending threat of poor air quality. Each class had the opportunity to participate in a "Glow Run" that took place in the gym. The event was still a blast and the air conditioning didn't hurt for our runners either ; ) Our students and their loved ones raised a staggering $38,000!!! This is unbelievable and our Renaissance Program and Parents' Club are so excited to be able to put these funds back into experiences for our students. Thank you so much to everyone who participated and donated. It was truly a success. I hope everyone has a great weekend and enjoys the now cleared skies!

Sincerely,

Rachel Casumpang

Principal

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP

Atlantic County Library Visit

Swift School students learned all about the fun activities, books, and programs the Atlantic County Library has to offer when Miss Ashley Rahn visited Swift School Library. Mrs. DeNaples and Miss Rahn talked about the recommended reading, getting a library card, and participating in a variety of programs for free in order to avoid the summer slide.

"Slaybaugh's Teaching Gardens"

As a final project of our Education Foundation Grant, Mrs. Efstatos' Class and Mrs. Russnak's & Mrs. Sullivan's class hosted outdoor environmental lessons for all of our Slaybaugh's third graders. The focus was on "Slaybaugh's Teaching Gardens," highlighting our three garden areas around the Elementary building. The gardens, (AtlantiCare Healthy Garden, Monarch Waystation, and Pollinator Rain Garden) were created and maintained to support our educational efforts in teaching sustainability. It is our hope to teach other students and staff the purpose of each garden, and how they will benefit our environment.

Each third-grade class attended six 15-minute stations, including vendors from the Atlantic County Utilities Authority, Cape Atlantic Soil Conservation, DEP's Watershed Ambassador, and AtlantiCare. Stations focused on Recycling, Composting, Soil Types in our Area, Pollution in our Waterways, Plastic Pollution, Water Conservation, Planting Seeds for Healthy Gardens, Rain Gardens, Native Pollinators and Plants, and Bees. It was a fun way to learn about our environment.

AtlantiCare Participates in "Slaybaugh's Teaching Gardens"

This week Miss Kelly, our AtlantiCare School Health Specialist, partnered with Mrs. Efstatos' class to hold a station at the AtlantiCare sponsored edible garden during the 3rd Grade Green Festival. All of the 3rd graders stopped by to plant their own vegetable seeds for a healthy backyard garden and take a tour of the school garden.

Inside Out

Over the past 2 weeks students participated in "Inside Out" lessons on emotions with our School Health Specialist, Miss Kelly. Our 1st-3rd grade students were challenged to write a message of courage or hope on a hand cut out and post it around the bulletin board to bring joy to their friends!
