Slurs at School
It has come to our attention that there has been an increase in the use of slurs among students since mid-winter break. Some students may believe that using these slurs is acceptable because they receive some form of "pass" or because they use the slur in a seemingly less offensive manner.
We want to make it clear that our school has no tolerance towards any type of slur or derogatory language. This behavior is unacceptable under any circumstances, and we are committed to maintaining a respectful and inclusive environment for all students.
We ask that all teachers refer any instances of this behavior immediately. Additionally, please take the time to talk to your students and reinforce the importance of respectful communication. Let them know that using slurs or any form of derogatory language is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.
We appreciate your partnership in addressing this issue and ensuring that our school remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone.
Thank you for your cooperation.

New Drivers Ed Laws
Sharing from Safe2Go Driving School................................
New bill presented SB5583 raises age for mandatory Driver’s Ed in Washington state
The recently introduced SB 5583 in Washington state proposes expanding mandatory driver's education to include individuals aged 18 to 24. Which indeed marks a significant shift in Washington's approach to driver education. Currently, this requirement applies only to those aged 15 to 17. The bill aims to improve young driver safety, addressing concerns raised by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission. If passed, the new requirements are expected to take effect by 2026.
This initiative also includes plans for the Department of Licensing to ensure accessibility and resources for the expanded driver's education program. It reflects a broader effort to reduce traffic accidents involving younger drivers.

CONGRATULATIONS ISABELLA ON YOUR 2ND TERM!
Sharing from Isabella Webb......................................... This past week was our HOSA State Leadership Conference in Spokane, and it was an incredible honor to lead the state with over 5,000 members and speak to more than 3,000 during the conference. As the only state officer eligible for re-election, I ran for a second term and I’m so proud to say I won(region 5 Vice President)
! Serving two consecutive terms is rare, and I’m excited to continue making an impact on future health professionals in Washington.
On top of that, our Anatomage team placed 2nd in the state for anatomy and is heading to nationals in Vegas for the second time! I also placed 9th in Prepared Speaking, which is amazing for my first time competing in the event. This past year has been life-changing, and I can’t wait for the opportunities ahead!

FEBRUARY STUDENT OF THE MONTH
Congratulations Sophomore - Bailee Gustafson on being voted Sultan High School February Turk of the Month. Bailee is kind, helpful and responsible in classes. She gets her work out and start without any reminders. Bailee had a great basketball season (out there belonging and uniting!) and in the classroom she is enormously helpful to her classmates. She works extraordinarily hard to make sure that she understands concepts and content - she has stayed late, asks great questions, or looks up other resources to help her understand. Thank you for being a fantastic Turk!
FEBRUARY STAFF OF THE MONTH
Congratulations Mr. Matthew Widaman on being voted Sultan High School February Staff of the Month. SHS Staff of the Month is nominated and voted on by our student body.
Mr. Widaman always has a positive attitude, and he is a great teacher to have at our school. He is the reason why several students look forward to coming to school every day. He respects his students and checks in with them every single day. He is a chill guy and we love him. Mr. Widaman is the GOAT!!
Thank you for being a fantastic Turk!
CLASS OF 2025
Dear Community,
The Senior Class of 2025 has begun their annual Senior Assassin game. This game has been played for many years and in other school districts. Please note, this is not a school sanctioned event; however, as the principal of SHS, I want to inform our community that this game will be happening soon so you are aware of what’s happening if you see kids with water guns hiding in bushes. We know that some of these water guns can look like real guns so please help us keep our kids safe as they play the game. The Senior Class Officers try to do a good job with laying down the rules and boundaries. Thank you for the support of our students.

Academic Supports
Homework Club:
Tues/ Thurs Homework Club (2:40 – 4:45) * is an optional opportunity for students who need extra support or time to either stay caught up on classwork/ homework or who need to catch up after being gone. These are students who want to work and are motivated to improve their grades for either sports or other reasons. Homework Club is encouraged, but is a choice, not a requirement.
If a student is being disruptive at Homework Club they can be asked not to return, as it is only for students who will use it appropriately.
Friday School:
Friday School (ERF Fridays 1:00 -3:15)* will be a required opportunity for students who are failing classes due to not completing classwork. Part of building relationships means caring about our students enough to hold them accountable for their choices and providing consequences when they are not meeting expectations. With this goal in mind, we are implementing the required opportunity of Friday School for students who choose not to complete work or need additional help.
Friday school is assigned by teachers. You will hear from the teacher by Wednesday, if they have Friday School. If your student completes the work, the teacher can sign off and your student will not need to attend Friday school.
The goal of Friday School:
Improved academic performance by students not meeting expectations.
Increased student sense of responsibility for academic success.
Improved use of classroom time.
Increased communication between school and parents.
Friday School is from 1:10 pm to 3:30 pm on Early Release Fridays.
*Activity buses are available to transport students home afterward.
Only the parent/guardian of a student assigned to Friday School may request a “reschedule” to the next available Friday. Should the student not attend their assigned Friday School for a reason other than an illness, the student will be assigned additional consequences:
First Missed Friday School: Re-assign Friday School and 2 days of lunch detention.
Second Missed Friday School: Parent meeting, 3 days of lunch detention, and re-assign Friday School.
Third Missed Friday School: Parent Meeting, 5 days of lunch detention, and re-assign Friday School.
Please contact the office at #360 793-9860 and ask Laura Breen or Micki Miller if you have any further questions.
