Dear Avon Lake City Schools Community,

Winter winds and snow arrived this week, and I hope everyone remained safe and warm during our day away from school on Tuesday. Our inclement weather alert system is up and running, and we do acknowledge receiving a handful of messages indicating the need for some updating of information. We are currently working with the support teams for this particular platform to continue enhancing and improving our communication outreaches. If you are not part of our School Messenger platform, we encourage you to follow the steps on the nearby flyer to get connected.

Parents and guardians can access announcements, messages, alerts, and preferences all from the web, without having to download an app. Please visit https://go.schoolmessenger.com to get started. If you haven’t used School Messenger before, you’ll need to sign up using the link in the top right corner. Parents and guardians will need to sign up using the same email address they have used for Power School. You will be able to immediately set your password to get signed up.

After successfully signing up, please review the following information and steps to customize your alert settings:

  • Click Login in the top right corner from the main webpage. Upon logging in, you will be able to see all the messages sent out over the last couple of months.
  • In the top left corner, click on the Hamburger Menu (Three bars).
  • From here, you can access your Preferences and your Contacts (your students, and yourself, if employed by the district).
  • In the preferences, you can view your My Contact Information that is synchronized from PowerSchool.
  • You can also set how you can be contacted over the six different message categories under My Message Preferences. Upon clicking each one, you can select Call, Text and/or Email.

ALCS Decision Making Considerations for Inclement Weather Days

This current winter weather prompts a few reminders about our decision making protocols when deciding whether or not to call off school. The District references www.weather.gov to help make its decision to close school. When this decision is made, a phone call will go to all families and an alert will be posted online. Our local broadcast media will be given updates as well. Whenever possible, the decision to close school will be made the previous evening, but may be announced as late as 6 a.m., depending on a variety of factors.

  • Though there is not a specific temperature policy for the schools, we do use the National Weather Service Wind Chill Chart as a guide, based on their methodology found at the National Weather Service.
  • Road conditions are another important factor, since this impacts the ability of our buses to run on time.
  • The District will most likely have school if the temperatures remain in the lightest blue color on the chart and transportation is uninterrupted. It is not uncommon for us to close when the wind chill is -15°F or colder for a sustained period-of-time, particularly during key times when students may be outside going to and from school.
  • Staff and student safety is our number one priority when deciding to cancel classes due to inclement weather.

Keep in mind that when Avon Lake City Schools are closed for weather, all evening activities at the elementary schools, and Troy are canceled. Learwood and High School activities may take place depending on the weather throughout the day. While I appreciate good-natured messages from students pleading me for a day off, they play absolutely no factor in my decision-making process. Also, online posts from local weather forecasters making predictions about the chances of having a snow day have little credibility.

As always, the ALCS team will continue to closely monitor conditions throughout the rest of the winter and share updates as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Weekend Activities, Drama Club, Wrestling Tournament, Craft Sale...

A variety of activities are underway this weekend, and we share several with the community here. As always, check the various calendars of the District to see where and when you can support endeavors connected with the ALCS. The High School PTSA's Christmas by the Lake Craft, Arts, and Gift show takes place in the High School Auxiliary Gym on Saturday, December 6th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please visit the District's Flyer Connection page for more information. The High School Wrestling program's Cobos Insurance Classic takes place this weekend as well, with the Boys Wrestling team's action getting underway at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 6th and the Girls Wrestling tournament at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, December 7th. Tickets are available for purchase online.

You won’t want to miss the winter production of Clue, courtesy of our very own High School Drama Club, which opens this evening, December 4th and runs through Saturday, December 6th at 7 p.m. at the Dr. Daniel B. Ross Performing Arts Center. A matinee performance will take place on Sunday, December 7th at 2 p.m. as well. Tickets for each performance can be purchased online. Come on out to support our cast and behind-the-scenes crew for this outstanding performance.

Congratulations Max Riley and Aidan Stewart!

Finally, two of our very own Avon Lake High School Shoremen made their college football intentions official earlier this week. Congratulations to Max Riley, who signed to play football at The Ohio State University, and Aidan Stewart, who signed to play football at The Air Force Academy next school year. These young men demonstrate the highest of achievement in their football endeavors and we express our commendation of their efforts. Congratulations to Max and Aidan, their families, and coaches on a job well done. A special recognition is given to Max Riley, who earlier this week was also named a finalist for the Paris Johnson Jr. Foundation Offensive Lineman of the Year award. These honors are a fine representation of all that can be accomplished in our school district with the proper motivation, determination, and talent. Way to go!
