KINDERGARTEN FUN AT THE FARM! 🎃🌽
On Wednesday, Mrs. Betts’ and Ms. Feldman’s kindergarten classes enjoyed a fun-filled fall field trip to Corn Fun Family Farm! Our kindergarteners had a blast exploring the farm, enjoying a hayride, playing in the corn maze, and going down the mountain slide. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the fall season and make special kindergarten memories!
FALL FUN WITH YOUNG 5'S
On Wednesday, October 7th, Mrs. Boni's Young Fives class took their very first field trip of the school year to Deneweth's Garden Center. It was a beautiful, sunny morning! ☀️ We had so much fun going through the inflatable haunted house, playing games, decorating pumpkins, riding on the spooky train, going through the corn maze, playing on the haystack, learning all about the life cycle of a pumpkin, conducting an experiment to find out if a pumpkin sinks or floats, and enjoyed cider and a doughnut! We had the best time! 👻🎃🚜🌽🍎🍩
3RD GRADE WIT & WISDOM
3rd grade is navigating through their Wit & Wisdom curriculum! Students were paired up to create illustrations of a tool or vehicle from our featured text The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau. The challenge came when one partner had to describe the tool or vehicle to the other, without stating what it was. Students "dove" into the activity! This led to discussions of how illustrations can help aid our comprehension, especially when we come across new words and concepts in nonfiction texts! Everyone did a great job!
REFLECTION FORM VS. SWIS REFERRAL
Our district-wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program in Fraser is designed to reduce undesirable behavior by reinforcing positive choices and rewarding good conduct. Occasionally, students may be asked to reflect on their actions. When reflection is needed, students will complete a Behavior Reflection Form, which helps them consider their choices and how to improve their decisions moving forward. These forms are sent home and kept by classroom teachers to reference as needed.
If repeated behaviors persist despite Behavior Reflections, or if a more serious offense occurs, a SWIS form will be completed by a staff member. This form is then logged into our Behavior Management System for documentation and follow-up by either the classroom teacher (minor) or building principal (major). In both cases, a form will be followed up with a call home.
By documenting and communicating these behaviors, our goal is that together Emerson will be a safe place for everyone. Thanks for your continued support!
MORNING ARRIVAL AND SUPERVISION
To keep our mornings calm, safe, and organized, we want to clarify our arrival procedures:
The first bell rings at 8:30 a.m. There is no outdoor supervision before 8:30 a.m. Please avoid dropping students off before 8:20 or leaving them unattended.
Line-up expectations: Students should go directly to their assigned entrance/door and wait calmly in line.
No play before school: The playground is closed before the first bell. Students should not be running around, playing tag or ball games, or using playground equipment during this time.
Early grades: In the early grades, parents/guardians are encouraged to wait with their child until the child enters the building.
Recently, we have noticed an increase in early drop offs and unsupervised play before 8:30 a.m. We appreciate your help in correcting this so that no one gets hurt and everyone starts the day ready to learn.
Thank you for your support and partnership. If you have any questions, please contact our office.

CREATING A PARENT/GUARDIAN ACCOUNT IN CANVAS
Below are the directions for pairing as a Parent Observer with your students’ Canvas account.
Parents can use Canvas to
Contact their child’s teacher
View grades, due dates, and events
See, and in many cases access, what the child is doing at school
Support an absent student
View classroom and building announcements
And more!
For the first step you will need to have two devices (tablet, laptop, computer or phone) available to be paired. One device will be used to log into your student’s canvas account. The other will be used to create your parent canvas account.
For parents/guardians of students whom are in young fives through 2nd Grade:
A QR code of your students’ username and password will have been sent home. Use your camera function to scan the QR code to access your student’s Canvas Account. If you are having issues with the QR code, contact your teacher or elementary media tech.
For parents/guardians of students whom are in 3rd-6th Grade:
To log in as your student, go to this website (preferably in Chrome, but Safari is okay):
https://www.fraser.k12.mi.us/myfps
Click on the icon that says Canvas Student Login.
Your student should know their username and password. If not, contact his or her teacher or your elementary media tech.

BEST PRACTICES TO PROTECT KIDS ONLINE
ATTENDANCE MATTERS!
MINUTES MATTER!
The bell to start the school day rings at 8:30 a.m. We have had a problem with many students arriving late to school. This not only affects the student who is tardy, but also has an impact on the rest of the classroom. Many important events take place at the beginning of the school day. When a student arrives late, they are missing out on important classroom assignments as well as important announcements. They also interrupt the learning environment for the rest of the students. Please make every effort to assure your student starts the day off in positive way by getting them to school on time.
We have also have an increasing number of students leaving early daily. We dismiss at 3:30 PM unless otherwise noted. Students withdrawn early also miss on daily instruction and interventions. They also disrupt the learning environment. Please make every effort to schedule appointments outside the school day. We want to make sure all of our students are learning. Once we reach 3:15 we may not be able to dismiss your student early. With the many moving parts at the end of the school day, it is not always possible to redirect a student to the office at that time.
HEALTH GUIDELINES FOR GOING TO SCHOOL
We want to partner with our families to make our school a safe, healthy and welcoming environment for your students.
Make sure to send your child to school if they are generally healthy and able to participate in their usual day-to-day activities. Avoid keeping children at home unless they are too sick to participate.
We have put together this helpful chart of when to keep your child home and when they can return to school for common illnesses

6TH GRADE VAPING PRESENTATION
We are excited to have CARE support our school’s Red Ribbon Month activities by providing their “Dispelling Myths and Revealing Facts on Vaping” presentation to each of our 6th grade classes.
The presentations will take place during HEART classes during the month of October and will complement our Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs Unit. This educational opportunity is designed to provide students with accurate, age-appropriate information to help them make informed and healthy choices.
Topics addressed during the presentation will include:
The ingredients and substances found in vaping products
