Message from Principal Tesch
We just wrapped up a wonderful Fall Ball hosted by Student Council, with nearly 450 well-dressed students attending a fun night of dancing with Sounds Unlimited at UW Superior! We were especially proud to receive compliments from the staff at UWS, who noted our students' exceptional politeness and respectful behavior throughout the evening.
Looking ahead, we strongly encourage all parents to attend our Parent-Teacher Conferences starting next week, October 23 and 27th, hosted in an open house style from 3:30-7:30pm both nights. It’s the perfect time to meet with teachers and see the excellent work at our Senior Project Showcase along with information from other student groups around the building. Please continue to use Powerschool to monitor your child's academic progress and to find the specific room numbers for the teachers you plan to see at conferences. Thank you for your partnership, we hope to see you!
Sincerely,
Kate Tesch

What is Vaping? What are the Risks? What is its appeal?
Vaping is inhaling and exhaling the aerosol produced when using an electronic vapor device.
E-cigarette aerosol is NOT harmless “water vapor” and can contain harmful substances.
Some e-cigarettes are disposable and are designed for one-time use. Some can be refilled or recharged and used over and over.
Most E-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is highly addictive. They can also contain both THC and CBD. These substances have been proven to harm brain development, concentration, self-control, attention and increases the risk of future addiction to other drugs. Nicotine can also make depression and anxiety worse, cause sleep problems, and create significant health issues in the future. Nicotine products come in a variety of flavors, which is very appealing to kids and young adults. E-cigarettes often look like other everyday objects, such as pens and USB flash drives.
As a parent, it is important to talk to your child about the dangers of nicotine while also remaining educated about the variety of products available. Start by asking your child in a non-judgemental way if they have tried vaping. Additionally, as parents it is crucial to set a good example for your children. As children are very impressionable and seeing those around them use nicotine products may lead to them not seeing it as dangerous.
Signs that your child may be vaping:
You may find devices that look like flash (USB) drives, e-liquid bottles, pods/ cartridges (that contain e-juice) or product packaging. Aside from leaf marijuana, gel jars that contain highly concentrated marijuana extract (dabs), small tools to scoop dabs and cartridges that contain THC oil or wax (a yellowish-brown substance) are signs of vaping marijuana.
Be on the lookout for purchases made online and charged to your credit card or unusual packages that arrive in the mail. Kids also buy them at big box stores, gas stations or from friends.
While the smell from vaping is faint, you may catch a whiff of a flavoring where there appears to be no other source. For example, if you smell bubble gum, mint or a fruity/sweet smell, take note. It might be a flavored nicotine vaping product. Marijuana vapes can produce a skunk-like smell.

New Trends to be aware of:
Zyns have recently gained popularity amongst teens as well. These are small pouches containing nicotine that are placed in between the lips and gums that directly distribute nicotine into the bloodstream. Studies have shown that nicotine pouches contain cancer causing chemicals. Zyns are often mislabeled and advertised as “risk free” because they are both smoke-free, and spit free, yet that doesn’t mean they aren’t just as harmful. In fact, they often are marketed as a way for users to quit using other tobacco products, however it isn’t an FDA approved “quit” medication.
