Hello Families Hello Families

While it was a short week, the class still managed to accomplish a lot. We continued discussing the holiday of Rosh Hashanah, examined real shofars, made sweet apple cake, began a bee hive/honey, multi step art project, attended a special assembly by the Rabbi and of course read books on the subject. We also completed a lot of math, much of it apple themed. We wrote in our journals, began formally learning how to write letters H and L celebrated a friends' birthday. For specials this week the class enjoyed Bible study with Miss Janene and Music with Miss Lisa. It was a fantastic week.

Literature, Language and Writing Literature, Language and Writing

We are discussing the holiday of Rosh Hashanah and thus we read the following books:

We read, Apple Days: A Rosh Hashanah Story, by Allison Sarnoff Soffer. This book tied in nicely with our apple sauce cooking day.

We read, Its Shofar Time, by Latifa Berry Knopf. This book explained the holiday in simple terms that the children could relate too.

We read, Is It Rosh Hashanah Yet? by Chris Badash. This simple book explained the holiday in kid friendly terms.

We read, Sammy Spiders First Rosh Hashanah, by Sylvia A. Rouss. This book explains the holiday from a spiders point of view. Although it was very informative, it is also a bit wordy and we ended up doing a picture walk through the end of the book. However the children still got a lot out of the story.

We began learning how to formerly write the alphabet this week. It was explained to the class that by using just four types of sticks, you can create the entire alphabet. There are long straight sticks, short straight sticks, small curved sticks and large curved sticks. We will begin by writing all the straight lined letters. (ex - H, T, E, L etc) Once these are mastered then we will add some curved letters and lastly will be the letters with diagonal lines. Its all about mastering the foundations and building on these skills. The letter H and L was introduced this week. We practiced making this letter using our sticks, tracing the sticks with our fingers (always starting at the top) and then using erasable sentence strips to actually write the letters. (ask your child to draw these letters - the results we saw were fantastic!) Finally we thought of words that begin with these letters. The class did an amazing job with this and we are thrilled with all of their hard work!

Mathematics / STEM Mathematics / STEM

The class played with many different types of math games this week. We began with using large apples labeled 1-5. First the children had to identify which number was on each apple. Then using small circles they had to decide what number was being represented (ie- 5 dots went on apple number 5, the numerical symbol for 2 went on the number 2 apple etc) and place the circle on the appropriate apple. They all did amazing work with this and loved participating in this lesson.

They also played a popsicle math game. Each popsicle had dots on it. The children had to count the dots and then find the corresponding popsicle stick to place on the back of the card to create the popsicle.

A lesson on teaching that number symbols stand for the amount of something was given this week. Using sandpaper numbers the children had to identify each number and trace them with their fingers. Then using tongs they placed the correct number of apple erasers under each number. (2 apples under the number 2)

Finally the children played a lock and key game. Each lock has stars on one side and the numerical number spelled out on the other. Once the stars are tabulated the child then has to find the corresponding key to open the lock.

All of these lessons were about numerical symbol identification, counting and fine motor skills. We are so proud of all of their hard work with these lessons!

Seasonal / Thematic Seasonal / Thematic

The class enjoyed a lesson on the Shofar and its significance. They then got to touch and examine two shofars and compare and contrast its size as well as practice blowing it. This was great fun.

As Rosh Hashanah is fast approaching we made yummy apple cake as a cooking lesson this week. Everyone had a turn to smash the apples, add ingredients and stir the batter. They loved this activity and of course eating it was also a huge hit!

The children began a multi step bee-hive art project this week. They began by rolling paint onto bubble wrap and then pressing the bubble wrap onto stock paper. Once the paint dries each child will then cut out their bee hive and add 'bees' to complete this project. So far it is a buzzing success.

Finally the entire school gathered this week to get a lesson on Rosh Hashanah from the Rabbi. He told explained what the holiday is about, blew the shofar ands sang songs with the children. When this was done everyone enjoyed apples and honey as a snack for a sweet new year!

Bible Study / Specials / Shabbat Bible Study / Specials / Shabbat

In music this week with Miss Lisa the children all sang songs about the upcoming holiday of Rosh Hashanah. They pretended to have apples and honey in their hands and danced and sang. It was so much fun.

Miss Janene continued talking about Creation in her Bible Study this week. The class is working hard on completing this star project with her. The results look amazing and we can not wait until you see the finished product!
