Issue #10: October 10, 2025
Principal Corner
Good afternoon, Chapelfield families.
We are thrilled to announce that Chapelfield Elementary has earned a 4.5-star rating on the state report card this year! Our goal is to continue to grow in our school performance—and it truly takes a team effort to make that happen.
You can support your child’s success by having them use Lexia and DreamBox daily at home. Click on the directions below to see how you can access these FREE programs at home. Students should complete 1–2 lessons each night. Also, make time to read together each evening—it’s one of the best ways to build strong readers!
Our PTO Read-A-Thon is a wonderful way to kick off this habit, along with One School, One Book, where we are reading The Wild Robot together.
Thank you for your partnership in our biggest fundraiser this year (see more information in the PTO section below)! Have a fantastic weekend!
Sincerely,
Nikki Miller
3rd Grade State Testing
Our 3rd graders will take their state reading test on Tuesday, October 14 and Wednesday, October 15. We are so proud of how hard our students have been working to get ready!
Here are a few ways you can help your child do their best:
-
Make sure they get a good night’s sleep before each testing day.
-
Eat a healthy breakfast each morning.
-
Arrive to school on time so they can start the day calmly.
-
Offer encouragement and confidence—remind them to take their time and do their best!
We know our 3rd graders will shine! 🌟
School Counseling Connection with Mrs. Jasin
Dear Families,
Executive functioning skills are the mental processes that help children plan, focus, remember instructions, manage emotions, and complete tasks successfully. These “brain skills” are the foundation for learning, problem-solving, and building independence, both in school and at home.
At school, we’re helping students strengthen seven key executive functions (see graphic below).
Try This at Home!
Plan Together: Let your child help plan a meal, make a grocery list, or pack for an event—great for planning and organization.
Talk It Out: When a problem comes up, ask, “What could we try next?” to build problem-solving skills.
Calm-Down Practice: Create a “cool-down corner” or routine to help your child manage big emotions.
Play Memory Games: Try “Simon Says” or simple recall games to boost working memory.
Set Mini Goals: Encourage one small goal each week (like remembering to pack homework) and celebrate progress.
When families and schools work together to strengthen these skills, students gain confidence, independence, and resilience.
Best,
Mrs. Jasin

Music with Mrs. Herrmann
Students are busy singing, moving, reading and performing music together. Kindergarten is learning about the many different ways we can use our voices and are excited to join in This is My Singing Voice. Both KG and 1st graders are exploring movement with scarves to Fallling Leaf. If your child has a scarf or a small towel, they can show you how this works. It’s a great way to get them singing, moving quickly and then calming down. Students are working on skills that include working with a partner, moving calmly through space while listening to and singing songs, following directions and keeping a steady beat. 2nd graders are reading combinations of three sounds and rhythms on the music staff. A current favorite is “Apple Tree.” Ask your child to teach you how they partner up and say hello while singing “Gilly, Gilly.” 3rd graders are discovering faster sounds in songs and are learning to improvise while drumming. They are showing great self control when it comes to drumming and are doing a great job of memorizing and copying various drumming patterns. 4th and 5th graders are reading eight beat rhythmic patterns and learning the difference between call and response. They are working on putting together a drumming ensemble, combining three parts. I am proud of their hard work!
Hope you have a great weekend,
Mrs. Herrmann
Attendance Procedures
Pursuant to House Bill 410, student attendance is calculated in hours. This includes absences that have been identified as both excused and unexcused by the school, as well as planned absences. Being late or tardy to school does calculate into the total hours absent.
If your child is going to be absent for any portion of the school day, please notify the school. You may report an absence by using our Online Absence Reporting available in the Parent Portal in Infinite Campus. To enter a request follow these simple steps:
1.Log in to your Infinite Campus Parent Portal account.
2. Select your child’s profile.
3. Navigate to the Absence Request section.
4. Fill in the required information, including the date and reason for the absence.
5. Submit your request.
You will be able to view the status of your request using the View Requests button.
You may also call Chapelfield at 614-478-5575 or email our secretary at gilzows@gjps.org.
Medical excuses from a doctor can be submitted to Stephanie Gilzow, our school secretary, through email (gilzows@gjps.org) or sending in a paper copy.
Parent Phone calls to change transportation
The front office is a busy place the last 30 minutes of school. We ask that parents NOT CALL to make transportation changes after 2 p.m. Please make sure students know your plan of pick up before they come to school.
