KODIAK CHARACTER TRAIT KINDNESS

Kindness: Acting with understanding, generosity and care

Overview

Our world needs more Kindness! That’s why Kindness is how we are starting the school year. Our definition of Kindness is acting with understanding, generosity, and care. You’ll hear a lot about Kindness this year because it is also 1 of our 3 outcomes:

Be Kind: Teaching social skills like listening, friendship, solving conflicts, and leadership. These skills are taught alongside Empathy, Respect, & Cooperation

Be Strong: Skills that help students focus, stay organized, and set goals. These skills are taught alongside Responsibility, Courage, & Perseverance

Be Well: Skills that help students handle their emotions and deal with stress. These skills are taught alongside Gratitude, Honesty, & Creativity

Questions to engage with your child with this work.

What does Kindness mean to you?

What is something Kind you did for someone else today?

IN THE CLASSROOMS THIS MONTH

This month we will be diving into our new year's themes, topics, and units. We will also be spending a lot of time in classrooms building relationships with classmates and teachers. We have also been creating classroom expectations and building a positive environment together. We are continually teaching and reminding them of what it means to be a Kodiak. We are covering rules in shared spaces as well. Shared areas include the hallways, bathrooms, cafeteria, and playground. A question you could ask your child is, "How are the expectations and rules different in the _________ (bathroom, hallway, cafeteria, playground)? We will continue to work on these expectations as the year progresses. Make sure to check out the student planner. It should be coming home every day.

Smartwatch and Smart Phone Policy at WPSIS

Smartwatch and Phone policy Our smartwatch policy is the same as our phone policy. If a student has a smartwatch, it needs to be off and in backpacks for the duration of the day. Please remind students to be responsible with their technology during the school day and to follow the policy. Teachers very much appreciate your support on this policy.

INSTRUMENT RENTAL NIGHT FOR BAND

On Tuesday, September 8th from 6-7 PM in The Band Room and HMS/WPSIS, parents and students can rent instruments for the year.

Milk

Please skim this next section😁. Students will now be able to choose between 1% and 2% plain milk at breakfast, nonfat chocolate or 2% milk with breakfast on Fridays only and lunch every day. This decision is based on stricter requirements from USDA about reducing sugar in school meals.

Thinking About Volunteering Your Time to Help Out?

Volunteers play an important role in supporting our school community in classrooms, on campus, and during field trips and outings. To help protect our students, all volunteers must complete required paperwork and comply with school policies.

Applications must be completed at least 48 hours prior to the first volunteer assignment.

STUDENT ATTENDANCE IS IMPORTANT

Showing up to school every day makes a big difference. When kids are in class, they’re learning new skills, building friendships, and staying connected to their teachers and school community. Missing just two days of school a month - whether excused or not - can add up quickly and make it harder to keep up in reading, lead to academic struggles, and even increase the risk of not graduating later on. We also know there are times when kids aren’t feeling well, and that’s when it’s important to make the right call.
