Message from Principal Nicole Pease
Students are learning and growing in many ways and it is exciting to see this in action. We are moving into the fall benchmark time and students in Grades 1-5 will take the MAP online assessment. Students are working hard to show all that they know. Teachers will use this information to focus upon areas that need extra attention to continue to ensure academic progress. You will receive a copy of the test results.
The mums are here! With the help of the 4th and 5th graders, 300 mums were unloaded for the PTO fundraiser! Spread the word!
We are busily preparing for our Open House and Harvest Supper. For new families, please park at Yankee Magazine at the top of the hill, unless you have very small children. There will be a bus providing rides to the school as our parking lot is so small. We will gather in the multipurpose room for supper, then move out into individual classrooms. This annual tradition is the first time we gather as a whole school community and it is a very special evening.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend, Nicole

Kind Kindergarten and First Graders
Super Second Graders
Last week we worked on making journals with Ms. Jeannie. The students enthusiastically chose a design for the cover and carefully watercolored their design. They are super excited to begin writing in their journals this week! Ms. Jeannie was kind enough to stay and help us with our self-portrait banners. The students painted them and now they are a lovely, colorful addition to our classroom. We can't wait for parents to see them at the Open House in October!
In Social Studies we have been learning about goods and services, producers and consumers, and wants and needs. We are working on making our own town to show our understanding. Stay tuned for progress on that!
Terrific Third Grade
The Third is easing into the routines of a whole week of school and establishing their classroom learning community. The children thought about what DCS Cares means as “rules” for our school and classroom, listing their ideas to follow these guidelines. Then, each child took an idea and illustrated it for our reminder board in the classroom. They also played Zones BINGO to practice our different Zones’ emotions.
For Language Arts, the class has started reading groups along with our UFLI phonics/spelling lessons. Our grammar study topic is Nouns.
For Math, the class continues to learn about graphs, including scaled graphing. The graphs are being used to see the relationship between groups and multiplication. The children enjoy the center games that practice the skills addressed in the lesson and support skills from past lessons.
In Science, they focused on clouds and weather patterns. The students listened to Tomie DePaula’s story - The Cloud Book, and then went outside with “cloud finders” to identify the different clouds. Then, they did experiments to see how wind affects cloud movement and participated in a Mystery Science Experiment on Cloud formation.
Fun in Fourth and Fifth Grade
In math we are exploring place value as large as the millions and decimals as small as the thousandths.
Reading, writing and spelling routines are reviewed and the class is looking forward to diving into some new materials.
On Wednesday, we started taking our fall NWEAs. The students are showing real dedication as the work through this task.
We have used some other time for letting our creativity show!

DCS collects aluminum can tabs for "Tabs for Taylor"
Taylor is 15 years old and has been a patient at Shriners Hospital since birth. She has benefitted greatly by receiving prosthetics and her family gives back by collecting can tabs. The can tabs go to purchasing items for patient care. Taylor is the niece of Sarah Precourt (Mrs. Hopkin's daughter).
DCS has been collecting tabs for years and countless students and their families have contributed to this effort. Please send in any tabs from aliminum cans and we will add them to the collection. Thank you!
