Rattler News
Newsletter for the Week of September 25th, 2023
Message from Principal Mrs. Chavira
Rattler Community,
This is our last week before our intersession break, and it has been great to see all of the wonderful things our Rattlers have been able to accomplish. We have started our student groups, successfully ran a round of Rattler Round-up (tutoring) and two Saturday Camps.
This week we are going to close our 9 weeks by having.
- A Wellness Wednesday to showcase fa program used by Kinder through 5th grade students.
- Peter Piper Family Night on Wednesday
- Career Day on Thursday
- GT Parent Night Opportunity
- and much more
We are also getting ready for our Fall into Learning Intersession Camp. This camp allows us to work with our Rattlers that may benefit from targeted support. If you receive an invitation, we highly encourage you to let your child attend. The camp will run Monday through Friday (Oct 2nd through the 5th) from 8am to 12pm. Breakfast will be provided. Students can bring a snack for lunch.
Thank you again for choosing TEAMSISD and Dr. Sue A. Shook Elementary for your child's educational journey.
Respectfully,
Cristina Sanchez-Chavira

New Information for the Week
Shelter in Place Drill
This week our Rattlers will be having a Shelter in Plac Weather Drill.
A Shelter for Severe Weather Drill is A response action schools take to quickly move students, staff, and visitors indoors, perhaps for an extended period of time, because it is safer inside the building than outside. For severe weather, depending on the type and/or threat level (watch vs. warning), affected individuals may be required to move to rooms without windows on the lowest floor possible or to a weather shelter.
Safety Reminders: PARKING LOTS
Recently we have seen students being dropped off in parking lots (teacher and parent). This is not a safe practice. To ensure your child's safety we HIGHLY RECCOMMEND that you use the parking lot as intended. Park and walk your child to the nearest sidewalk. Parking lots have many blind spots and are dangerous for students to be walking. Know that it does not matter how rushed we are; accidents occur in a second. Help us keep all of our Rattlers safe. Stay alert, attentive and be patient.
Students arriving late
Students arriving after 7:45 must be accompanied to the door. We are noticing students arriving well over the tardy bell and are being dropped off in the parking lot and they are walking up to the doors by themselves. Please make sure you are walking your child to the door.
Fall Into Reading-Intersession Camp
We are excited to announce our Fall Intersession information. Students that attend will have a great 4 half days will fun learning and targeted support to help them master grade level content. As a reminder, this camp is by invitation only from Monday, Oct 2nd to Thursday, Oct 5th from 8:am to 12:00
- Student arrival will be through the cafeteria.
- Arrival: Doors will open at 7:30am and breakfast will be provided in the cafeteria until 7:55am
- Dismissal: Students will be dismissed out of the cafeteria doors at 12:00pm
- ESL Academy PK/Kinder: Students attending ESL PK/Kinder until 2:00pm, will be dismissed through the FRONT Doors.
- Attire: Free dress or take part in our DRESS-UP Days.
Gifted and Talented Parent Session for Identified GT Students
There will be a special meeting next Tuesday, September 26 at 5:30 pm in the cafeteria specifically about how our campus supports our GT students. This meeting is only for parents with students who have already qualified for the program.
An informational meeting will be held during our second marking period to discuss the nomination and testing process for those students whose parents would like to have them tested for GT.
Wellness Wednesday
SISD has scheduled a family wellness event in which parents are invited to join their child during their scheduled PE on Wednesday, September 27. During this time, you will be able to participate in the EZ Scan program with your child and learn about the district’s weekly initiative to have students get moving! Unfortunately, this program is not utilized by PK.
Parents will report to the front office area and line up on the door opposite the front office camera. At the listed time, the door will open for parents to sign in and report to PE with their child. Students are only able to be at PE during their regularly scheduled time listed on the flyer.
Those joining us for this event are reminded of dress code policies. Anyone in mid-drift, see-through, short, or any other type of clothing deemed inappropriate will be asked to leave. We understand that you are here to exercise with your child but keep in mind that they are in their uniform usually when completing this program and do not need special workout attire. Thank you for your understanding.
Walk a Mile in her Shoes
We are very proud to announce that our male educators will be taking part in this year's YWCA Walk a mile in her shoes event. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes supports YWCA El Paso's Sara McKnight Transitional Living Center for survivors of domestic violence. At this event, men are asked to walk in high-heeled shoes to actively engage in solidarity in confronting gender stereotypes and expectations. Together we can face the root causes of many gender violence instances.
Any student who donates at least $1 to this cause, will earn a high heel placed in our campus foyer and a free dress pass for Thursday, October 19, the day of this event. All money donated will be directly donated to this cause with us splitting the pot donated by students and staff between our five participants. A flyer has been sent or is available in the front office to complete your child's information and attach your donation.
To donate online, please see our most recent newsletter and scroll to the section explaining the campaign and click a link for one of the five gentlemen.
If you have already donated online, please send the email confirmation to bburne01@sisd.net so we may count this donation for the free dress pass!
Spirit Shirts HAVE ARRIVED
Spirit shirts will be sorted by our amazing volunteers and distributed by this week. For those wanting to still purchase a spirit shirt please know that we have ordered a limited number of extras but will distribute preorders first and allow time for any missing shirts to be identified. With that being said, we will not be selling any extra shirts we may have until after the October Intersession. We will send the information in our weekly newsletter when we return on how you can purchase one of these shirts.
Chocolate Fundraiser Update
Thank you again to all of our families who participated in our fall fundraiser. We sold 1000 boxes of chocolate as a campus!
All other prizes have been ordered with the vendor and will be delivered to our campus during Fall Intersession. If payment is not made this week, that student will not be able to participate in the free dress and all other prizes will be held. Thank you for your understanding.
Carreer Week
Next week we are excited to celebrate Career Awareness with special dress up days and a Career Day Expo where students will be able to learn about a variety of professions in the many pathways highlighted by our district. If you live around the campus, please note that we will be having a Department of Motor Vehicles Helicopter landing as well as a Black Hawk Landing. Both will be landing between 8am and 9:00am.
Thank you in advance to the many parents who signed up to be a presenter!
Seize Your Opportunity
IT IS SCIENCE FAIR TIME FOR ALL 3RD TO 5TH GRADE
3rd-5th Grade Parents,
Your students should have received their Science Fair Project packet from their teacher. During our informational meeting last week, we discussed the items within the packet to include the websites where ideas can be found or researched.
While every child in 3rd-5th grade is required to complete a science project, we encourage you to use your child's interests or questions about their world to guide them. Some teachers may allow students to select their own category while others may have them randomly draw. There are many possibilities in every category. If you want your child to have a higher chance of making it to the campus and/or district science fair, do know that the most popular categories are Life and Physical but the others can be just as fun and easy!
Should you have any questions, your child's teacher is your first go-to. We also have two amazing curriculum coaches on campus that can assist you with those questions. They can be reached at the emails below as they are always working with our teachers and at-risk students and are not necessarily at their office during the day.

Campus Science Fair for Class Winners 10-21-23

The packet your child received is attached in both English and Spanish.
Save the Date: Storybook Parade
At this time final plans are being made to hold our traditional Storybook Parade on Tuesday, October 31st in the morning to celebrate literacy. Our students in Kinder-5th grade will walk the parade route located on Paseo del Este (directly in front of the school) with parents invited to line the street. While more details will be released after intersession, we want all of our families to be aware of the theme that each grade level has chosen. Students may participate in the theme or come dressed in their own costume. Please note that accessories and masks of any kind are not permitted.
Due to the amount of walking and safety concerns, PK students do not walk in the parade but have a special seat in our cafeteria parking lot to be spectators and see all of their fellow students dressed up.

Safety Reminders
Traffic
Student Safety and Community Safety is our priority. It takes a second for an accident to occur and for this reason, we need to make sure that we have a clear mind and are not rushed when we approach our campus.
General
- Remember to be courteous to all drivers.
- Please refrain from honking or cutting drivers off. We need to always be courteous to each other. We are part of the same community.
- We understand that we do not have enough parking for all parents. All schools struggle with parking. Please be aware of where you are driving and who is around you.
- Always use crosswalks or approach administration or support personnel to cross you. We are our children's roll models. Would you like your child to think it is safe to cross anywhere down a street?
Car Drop-Off Etiquette
Car drop-off must be used by students that are independent enough to exit their vehicles with their backpacks on. Support your parent community by doing the following.
- Always remain in your vehicle. *If you need to exit your vehicle to help your child, then your option should be to park and walk your child.
- Always park at the top of the lane, first sign. Please do not stop at the door walkway. This limits the number of kids that can exit the vehicle.
- Make sure students are ready to exit the vehicle. If your child requires much assistance from you, please park as you are encouraged to not exit your vehicle.
Car-pick-up Etiquette
- Always display on your DASHBOARD your YELLOW car sign. If you do not have a car sign, please park to pick up your child.
- Do not exit your vehicle. Always remain in your vehicle. We will bring your child to you.
- Never park in our pick-up area
- Do not utilize the exterior or 2nd lane to have kids run to you OR pass the vehicles before you.
In the event you feel a driver or parent is impacting student, please do not engage. Notify administration. We will do the following.
- The administration will contact the parent and advise them of proper procedures
- Second or severe offense: Vehicle information will be given to police service.
Thank you, Rattler Community, for your support. Let us make sure we keep our Rattlers safe.
Parent Involvement
Would you like to be a Parent Volunteer?
Are you interested in becoming a volunteer? While we are still finalizing our date for the informational meeting, you can complete your district background check now through this link. https://my.sisd.net/public_apps/dps-cch-public/#!/home/
Background checks must be done yearly with them being valid from July 1 to June 30 of the current school year.
For our campus, you will not only need to be cleared by the district but also attend one of our orientations that will be held throughout the school year. We will hold these both mornings and evenings to accommodate all parents. These orientations will allow you to learn about the process of coming into the campus and the various opportunities available. More information about these orientations will be shared once finalized.
We would love to have your help!

Technical Difficulties (Skyward and Clever)
Skyward Parent Accounts
We are aware that a few parents are experiencing difficulty with accessing their parent Skyward account. We have reached out to district officials for assistance and will send more information as we receive it. Thank you.
Clever and Lexia
Skyward connects directly with Clever and Lexia. These problems have impacted our logins. We apologize and we are hoping the issue gets resolved soon.
Do you have a balance?
Currently, some families that are starting to carry a balance forward over $50. As a reminder, in the fall we will be having a Student Appreciation Event that will only be available for students with a balance less than $10. This includes balances for the following:
- Technology
- Library Books
- Cafeteria Meals
- Chocolate Fundraisers
Please monitor these balances and take care of them before it becomes to late. Thank you all again for your support.
Dress Code
As we enjoy our free-dress days, we are noticing some concerns with not following dress code. As a reminder, the following is not allowed on campus at any age.
- Tops that show your mid-section such as halter-tops
- Shorts shorter than the tips of a Childs fingers when their hand is extended on their side
- Spaghetti straps or strapless outfits (one sided or both)
- Long earrings that can get caught while playing
- Acrylic long nails that effect pencil grip and can scratch other students in play.
*We must keep in mind that elementary students are very active and we must make sure that they are dressed appropriately to allow for proper movement and safe play.
Please see the link below for their student dress-code.
Cellphones or Smart Watches on Campus
We have been noticing a concern with parents calling students during the instructional day. As a reminder, the SISD cellphone policies prohibits students using cellphones during the instructional day. We allow phones as long as they are put away in student backpacks. Many teachers have implemented a holding area for cell phones to make sure they are all put away with no worry of them being lost of stolen until the end of the day. Please review SISDs Cellphone policy listed below.
22-23 Student Code of Conduct (Still in place until 23-24 Board approved update) page 29
ELECTRONIC DEVICES AND TECHNOLOGY RESOURCES
Use of district-owned equipment and its network systems is not private and will be monitored by the district. [See policy CQ for more information.] Possession and Use of Personal Telecommunications Devices, Including Cell Phones, and Other Electronic Devices The district permits students to possess personal cell phones for safety purposes; however, these devices must remain turned off during the instructional day, including during all testing, unless they are being used for approved instructional purposes. [For graphing calculator applications on computing devices, see Textbooks, Electronic Textbooks, Technological Equipment, and Other Instructional Materials.] A student must have approval to possess other personal telecommunications devices such as laptops, tablets, or other portable computers.
Students are not permitted to possess or use personal electronic devices at school unless prior permission has been obtained. Without such permission, teachers will collect the items and turn them in to the principal’s office. The principal will determine whether to return items to students at the end of the day or to contact parents to pick up the items.
The use of cell phones or any device capable of capturing images is strictly prohibited in locker rooms or restroom areas while at school or at a school-related or school-sponsored event. If a student uses a telecommunications device without authorization during the school day, the device will be confiscated. The parent may pick up the confiscated telecommunications device from the principal’s office for a fee of $15. Confiscated telecommunications devices that are not retrieved by the student or the student’s parent will be disposed of after the notice required by law. [See policy FNCE for more information.] In limited circumstances and in accordance with law, a student’s personal telecommunications device may be searched by authorized personnel. [See Searches and policy FNF for more information.] Any disciplinary action will be in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct. The district (or campus) is not responsible for damaged, lost, or stolen telecommunications devices.
