Kindergarten First Check Out
Kindergarten classes enjoyed an additional Mr. Wiggle story, Mr. Wiggle's Library. After spending time talking about proper book care, students were able to select their first library book to take back to class. Students only check out one book at a time, so in order to establish the routines, they are currently practicing returning their books on time.
But Excuse Me That is My Book
Charlie and Lola have already won the hearts of readers in three winning books, including I Am Not Sleepy and I Will Not Go to Bed. And now they’re quickly gathering more fans as an animated series on the Disney Channel. Adorably true-to-childhood and laugh-out-loud funny, Charlie and Lola chronicles the day-to-day moments and interactions in the life of two extremely endearing siblings. In this new tale, Lola has become obsessed with Beetles, Bugs, and Butterflies, the best book in the whole world. It’s funny, it has pictures, and it is "very great and extremely very interesting." It’s the only book she wants to take out of the library. What will she do when she discovers that somebody else has borrowed her book?
1st and 2nd grade students enjoyed this story and talked about why it is important to try new books.
The Oldest Student: How Mary Walker Learned to Read
In 1848, Mary Walker was born into slavery. At age 15, she was freed, and by age 20, she was married and had her first child. By age 68, she had worked numerous jobs, including cooking, cleaning, babysitting, and selling sandwiches to raise money for her church. At 114, she was the last remaining member of her family. And at 116, she learned to read. From Rita Lorraine Hubbard and rising star Oge Mora comes the inspirational story of Mary Walker, a woman whose long life spanned from the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement, and who--with perseverance and dedication--proved that you're never too old to learn.
3rd - 5th graders enjoyed learning about Mary Walker. Students used kiddle.co to research the oldest person living today.
Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of the John J Harvey
The John J. Harvey fireboat was the largest, fastest, shiniest fireboat of its time, but by 1995, the city didn't need old fireboats anymore. So the Harvey retired, until a group of friends decided to save it from the scrap heap. Then, one sunny September day in 2001, something so horrible happened that the whole world shook. And a call came from the fire department, asking if the Harvey could battle the roaring flames. In this inspiring true story, Maira Kalman brings a New York City icon to life and proves that old heroes never die.
International Dot Day
International Dot Day, a global celebration of creativity, courage and collaboration, began when teacher Terry Shay introduced his classroom to Peter H. Reynolds’ book The Dot on September 15, 2009.
The Dot is the story of a caring teacher who dares a doubting student to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to “make her mark”. What begins with a small dot on a piece of paper becomes a breakthrough in confidence and courage, igniting a journey of self-discovery and sharing, which has gone on to inspire countless children and adults around the globe.
Each year on International Dot Day – September15th ish – the inspiration continues. What started as a story in the pages of a book is transforming teaching and learning around the world as people of all ages re-discover the power and potential of creativity in all they do.
All students enjoyed using the iPads and the Quiver app to explore their dot with augmented reality. Check out the video for some of our fun. Some students also visited a website Spirograph where they were able to get creative - https://nathanfriend.io/inspiral-web/
4th and 5th grade Research Project
For Hispanic Heritage Month 4th and 5th grade students selected a country to research and used a Canva template to share the information they learned through the kid friendly search engine kiddle.co. The students downloaded the report and uploaded it into a Padlet board. Here is a link to the completed projects - https://indianriver.instructure.com/courses/63379/pages/hispanic-heritage-month-research
Federico and the Wolf
With his red hoodie on and his bicycle basket full of food, Federico is ready to visit Abuelo. But on the way, he meets a hungry wolf. And now his grandfather bears a striking resemblance to el lobo. Fortunately, Federico is quick and clever—and just happens to be carrying a spicy surprise! Federico drives the wolf away, and he and Abuelo celebrate with a special salsa. Recipe included.
Kindergarten through 3rd grade students enjoyed this Fractured Fairy Tale to connect with Hispanic Heritage Month.
