As we head into the last stretch of school, students and staff will be busy working on our end of the year skills, assessments and celebrations. Grades 3-5 will also be completing the ND A+ statewide summative assessment. All students in grades 3-5 complete an online test in Reading, Writing and Math. Grade 4 has already assessed in Science. The North Dakota Content Standards serve as the foundation for the entire ND A+ assessment system, with all three of the assessments strongly aligned to the ND educational content standards. The assessments within the system, each with a unique use and purpose, connect together to provide multiple pieces of evidence and support educators, schools, and districts in creating a more coherent, comprehensive story of student learning. Per the Berg Leadership Team goals, students receive a snack or gum when testing to help with concentration. In May, students will continue to complete end of year assessments. These assessment scores are used for the school data shared on Insights in the fall. Please encourage your child(ren) to do their very best on these assessments as our results are compared to the other schools in the state and we want to shine and show everyone what we know!

To celebrate our last 26 days of school, the Berg Student Council has planned dress up days for the last 26 days of school. We hope students are able to participate as much as possible to join in the fun! Please do not feel you need to purchase anything special for the dress up days.

Teacher Requests for the 2026-2027 School Year Teacher Requests for the 2026-2027 School Year

The assigning of students for the 2026-2027 school year will begin at the end of April. We take a great deal of time in assigning students to the appropriate classrooms. We take into consideration the needs of all of our students and decide the best placement based on their learning styles and the teaching styles of teachers. Requests will be taken into consideration but there are no guarantees that those requests will be granted. Teacher requests must be made in writing. Please list your child’s name, the teacher you would like, and the reason for making that request. In order to be considered, all requests need to be turned into the office by April 17th.

Spring is definitely in the air, and we are busy in the music room. We celebrated Music in Our Schools month in March with a Music March Madness: Battle of the Decades. It has been fun learning about the progression of technology in music and listening to some great hits! In music class we are working hard at mastering all the rhythmic and melodic elements we have learned throughout the year! We are singing, playing recorder, xylophones, glockenspiels, percussion instruments, and the fifth graders are playing ukuleles!

Happy April Everyone,

This month students will finish learning about the W for Wise Choices and begin learning about the S for Show respect in classroom counseling lessons. The letters come from the Acronym PAWS which stands for Prompt, Act Responsibly, Wise Choices, and Show Respect. These are our building wide expectations for students to follow. Students will learn about things like respecting others, respecting our planet, respecting different cultures, etc.

Have a great month,

Mr. Ascheman

Health and Wellness Fair Health and Wellness Fair

We had such a wonderful time at our first Health and Wellness Fair. It was so great seeing our students and families come together to learn, connect, and have fun while focusing on healthy habits.

A big thank you to all of our amazing partners who helped make this event possible. The Pit, Jess and William Neel, led engaging fitness demonstrations. The Southwest District Health Unit shared important tobacco prevention resources. Sarah Mendieta from Best Friends Mentoring shared mentoring opportunities. Hanah Pepin from Parks and Rec had our students moving. DSU Professor TJ Dempsey helped students learn about how our brain works. Andrea Evenson brought a fun and interactive music class for students to enjoy. Our Fire Department created an exciting obstacle course that had everyone up and moving. The DSU Ag Club taught students how food is grown right here in North Dakota, and the DSU Nursing Department shared helpful nutrition information. Rhonda Kraenzel helped highlight the importance of books and building a love of reading. Mrs. Urlacher shared the importance of healthy bedtime routines.

A special thank you to Continental Resources, Inc. for sponsoring our smoothie station. It was a favorite for many of our students and families.

We are also so grateful for our continued partnership with National Junior Honor Society and Danielle Riesgraf. Their support and dedication to volunteering and helping our community truly make events like this possible.

This event was made possible through an MCH, Maternal and Child Health, grant. These grants support programs that promote the health and well-being of children and families. As a Full Service Community School, we are able to bring resources, education, and opportunities like this directly to our students and community.

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported this event. We feel so lucky to be part of such a caring and supportive community
