October Lifeline: Teamwork
"I am a helpful and contributing group and team member, and feel responsible for helping the team reach its goals."
What is Teamwork?
Teamwork means helping and caring for others so the whole group can succeed—whether that’s your class, your family, a sports team, or your friends. When you show teamwork, you do your part, try your best, and look out for the people around you. Good teammates are reliable, kind, and willing to work together to make things better for everyone.
Family Discussion:
Talk together about ways you can show teamwork in your everyday life.
Questions to Try:
What does being a good teammate look like at school?
How can we show teamwork in our family?
Why do you think teamwork makes things easier or more fun?
Dear Boone Meadow Families -
What a wonderful and full week it has been at Boone Meadow! Our campus has been buzzing with rich learning, meaningful experiences, and community connection. This week alone, we welcomed visitors from the Hussey-Mayfield Libraries, hosted fire safety lessons with the Zionsville Fire Department, hosted a blood drive, and celebrated the planting of new trees on our grounds. We are grateful for the many ways our school and community come together for kids.
A Lasting Legacy – New Trees for Campus -
On Wednesday, Circle City Trees delivered and planted five new trees on our campus. Each 4th grade class “adopted” a tree as part of a legacy project—caring for it, naming it, and leaving a lasting mark on Boone Meadow. Funded by PTO, this project is envisioned to continue each year so every 4th grade class leaves behind something meaningful to connect their memories here.
Safety First, Always
Over the past couple of weeks, our students and staff have been practicing a variety of safety drills in thoughtful and supportive ways. This week, preschool through 2nd grade students learned directly from Zionsville Fire Department firefighters during fire safety lessons—an engaging and memorable experience. We also held a lockdown drill today, and our students did an excellent job practicing procedures. While such situations are very unlikely, preparation matters. Please know that safety at Boone Meadow is always centered on children’s well-being and supported by our dedicated partners, especially Officer Tom Maxson, our SRO.

3rd & 4th Grades - Student-Led Grants (PTO)
ILEARN Checkpoints
Starting this school year, IDOE requires all schools to administer ILEARN Checkpoints three times a year for students in grade 3-8. Each checkpoint assesses standards in English Language Arts and Math. These checkpoints are only formative. This means that they are giving teachers information to help inform their instruction to best meet the needs of each student. ZCS is giving the checkpoints after fall break (checkpoint #1: October 20 – 31), after winter break (checkpoint #2: January 6-16), and before spring break (checkpoint #3: March 16-26). The final summative ILEARN assessment is given in April.
ZCS uses state-approved, research-based literacy and math curriculum that has a set scope and sequence in which standards are taught. This means that each ILEARN checkpoint may assess some standards that have not directly/explicitly been taught yet. If this is the case, teachers will use the checkpoint as a pre-assessment to find out what students may already know before direct instruction occurs. To find out more information about ILEARN checkpoints, please click here for our ZCS FAQ.

School Safety Message: Caring For Others, Self, and Our Space
Dear Boone Meadow Elementary School Families,
The safety and well-being of our students is, and will always remain, our highest priority. At Boone Meadow Elementary, we believe that safety comes not only from secure procedures but also from nurturing confidence, peace of mind, and a sense of community for every child and family.
As part of this commitment, we will be conducting our required safety drills throughout this school year. Our goal is to equip students with life-long safety practices that empower them to make wise choices in uncertain situations. For example, when teaching our age-appropriate, modified ALICE protocols for lockdowns, one simple guiding phrase we use is: “Go away from danger.”
Our staff carefully designs these lessons to be developmentally appropriate, reassuring, and supportive, ensuring that students feel both safe and confident as they learn. Just as we practice fire and tornado drills to prepare for the unexpected, these safety practices help us build a foundation of peace, preparedness, and resilience.
Thank you for trusting us and the partnership we share in caring for your children. If you ever have questions or would like to know more about our safety practices, please do not hesitate to connect with any member of our Boone Meadow Elementary School team.
With gratitude and assurance,
Tom Hundley
Principal, Boone Meadow Elementary School
