Melissa High School's UIL Academic Team is advancing to State after earning the title of Academic Runner Up at the UIL 5A-2 Regional Meet last weekend. Additionally, the Speech/Debate team were crowned Regional Champions and two students were named Regional Champions in their events. Congratulations to all participants and teachers. The Melissa High School Theatre UIL One-Act Play Company is State bound! This past weekend the MHS One-Act Play performed at the UIL 5A OAP Regional Competition, placing 2nd in the competition. Experience this entertaining OAP for free as they perform for the public on May 10 at 7:00 p.m. in the Melissa Arts Center. Congratulations to the four Melissa High School art students who were awarded honors at the Region-at-Large South Art Show hosted by The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. These awards recognize and celebrate the talents of young artists and writers nationwide. Sophia Helton earned the Silver Key Award and all four Cardinals received an Honorable Mention Award: Helton, Giuliana Nichols, Yacouba Ouologuem, and Crischa Tusacano. These students also showcased their work on Thursday, May 2 at the Congressional Art Show. Great job, Cardinals, for showcasing your creativity with excellence! The Melissa Middle School Theatre's Mainstage Co. will be performing their spring musical, Newsies, on May 7, 9, and 11 at the Melissa Middle School. The performances on May 7 and 9 will begin at 7:00 p.m. and the performance on May 11 will begin at 2:00 p.m. Newsies is a high-energy, delightful musical based on the historical news strike of 1899 in New York City. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $8 each. Come out and support our Cardinals!

Congratulations to the 37 teachers who completed the Texas Reading Academies this week! Elementary K-3rd teachers from all four campuses dedicated themselves to attending 10 sessions throughout the school year, immersing themselves in the Science of Teaching Reading to enhance classroom instruction. Led by their cohort leader, Marshay Roberts, they each underwent four observation and coaching sessions, carefully refining their reading practices and setting professional goals. Melissa ISD is committed to providing the most effective and engaging reading instruction while instilling a love of learning and reading in the students. Thank you, teachers, for your dedication to our Cardinals!

The Melissa High School musical theatre classes will present the Cardinal Cabaret and Spring Showcase on Wednesday, May 8 at the Melissa Arts Center, featuring an evening of group numbers and solos. This year the night will be broken into two groups: Cardinal Cabaret with the Musical Theatre classes starting at 6:00 p.m. and the Spring Showcase with the Advanced Musical Theatre class starting at 8:00 p.m. Admission is free. We hope to see you there!

Reminder: Let's prioritize the safety of our children by remembering to slow down and obey traffic laws and signs, especially in school zones. Be advised that the Melissa ISD Police Department will be helping to keep our campuses safe by enforcing traffic laws. Additionally, please remind the high school drivers in your household to prioritize safety by following traffic laws and exercising caution on their way to and from school.

Sit With Us is a monthly discussion group designed to address concerns, ask questions, and collectively work toward solutions with your child’s campus administration. The philosophy underlying Sit With Us is that Melissa parents are Cardinal Champions who advocate for the best interests of not only their own children but for all students. If an issue affects one Cardinal, it impacts all Cardinals. If it matters to one Cardinal, it matters to all Cardinals.

This month, we extend an invitation to the community to join us during our Community Sit With Us meeting as we discuss the current landscape of our schools and emphasize the importance of working together to support our students, teachers, and administration.
