According to the US Department of Labor, observed on the first Monday in September, Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being. Before it was a federal holiday, Labor Day was recognized by labor activists and individual states. After municipal ordinances were passed in 1885 and 1886, a movement developed to secure state legislation. New York was the first state to introduce a bill, but Oregon was the first to pass a law recognizing Labor Day, on February 21, 1887. During 1887, four more states – Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York – passed laws creating a Labor Day holiday. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday.

With that being said, I hope this message finds you well. I trust that you enjoyed your Labor Day weekend. It was wonderful to spend some extra time with chosen family and friends enjoying the beautiful weather and getting on the golf course!

As we get back into the swing, I wanted to inform you that this week, our students will be taking their MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) tests. On Tuesday and Wednesday, students will take their English Language Arts test during their ELA periods. On Thursday and Friday, students will take their Math test during their Math periods. These assessments are an important tool to help us understand each student’s progress and tailor our instruction to better meet their needs.

To ensure that your child is fully prepared for the test, please take the following steps:

  1. Charge iPads: Please make sure that your child’s iPad is fully charged each day this week. A well-charged device will help avoid any technical issues during the test.

  2. Ensure Rest: A good night’s sleep is crucial for optimal performance. Please ensure that your child is well-rested and prepared to do their best.

Your support in these areas will greatly contribute to a smooth testing experience for your child. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us.

Thank you for your cooperation and support!
