The Doty Digest

February 9th 024
Principal's Corner
Greetings Doty Families!
Wow, 100 days of school have gone by. This is always a nice opportunity to sit back and reflect upon all the growth the students have made since the beginning of the year. I think that one of the best parts of being an educator is being able to bear witness to young humans growing up and figuring out who they are!
Thank you to all of you who baked for, came to, and organized the pie breakfast! What a delicious and fun event to have every year. Worcester is a very special place indeed. Please join us for some pie in faces at our all school meeting on February 14th at 2PM.
As many of you know from the budget process, both Doty and Rumney have very low projected enrollments for both PreK and kindergarten next year and in order to stay in line with what we know to be best practice and district class size policy, the two programs will be combined for next year. The location for the combined kindergarten has not yet been decided but will be determined before February break.
The decision for the PreK program has been made and that will be housed at Rumney for next year. Rumney has two licensable rooms available so we will be able to jointly offer both morning and afternoon PreK sessions and wrap-around care through Community Connections.
I want to reassure folks that this has been a programmatic decision and we would have moved in this direction even if we weren’t in the midst of a configuration study. I encourage all of you to follow the work of the configuration study by tuning into the expanded finance committee meetings that are dedicated to discussing configuration options.
In closing, thank you for continuing to send your muffins in with a variety of outerwear and extra clothing. Outdoor time in weeks like this past one are often sloppy and goopy!
As always, thank you for sharing your students with us!
Gillian

Healthy Snacks
Happy Weekend to the Doty Families. We have been discussing nutrition in every classroom this past month. Next week, we will be making some nutritious food. I would like to share some ideas for healthy snacks that don’t cost a lot and may be easy for some of the older Doty students to make at home.
Nutritious and delicious snacks are crucial for your children's overall well-being. Opting for wholesome options can contribute to their growth and development. Fresh fruits such as apple slices with peanut butter are not only tasty but also packed with vitamins. Vegetables like baby carrots or cucumber sticks with hummus make for a crunchy and satisfying snack. Whole grain crackers and cheese provide a good balance of carbohydrates and protein. Yogurt with a drizzle of honey and a handful of granola is a tasty and nutrient-rich treat.
For a quick energy boost, try a small handful of mixed nuts and dried fruits for a mix of healthy fats and essential nutrients. Smoothies made with low-fat milk, fresh fruits, and a touch of honey can be both hydrating and enjoyable. Incorporating these nutritious options into your child’s snack routine can promote a lifelong habit of making healthy food choices. Have fun while trying some new foods. -Nurse Lydia
100th Day Wrap Up - 6th grade
Here are quotes from students about the 100th day of school.
"One Kindergartener says that he got to eat candy from Jill Drury. He was very surprised when he came into school and there were alot of people that looked like old people. A second grader was very scared and surprised because the teachers looked scary. A fifth grader said that Sonya looked a little creepy because she had plaster on her face. She also said that Kindergarteners had head bands that said I have been in school for 100 days. Another fifth grader said that the teachers' costumes were creepy." -Jack
"At the beginning of the day when the bus driver was laughing some of the k-2 kids liked it. Kids got hats that said they were 100 days smarter and they made necklaces with 100 cheerios. They thought it was funny that all the adults were dressed up as 100 year olds.
3-6 thought that it was really fun. It was surprising at the beginning of the day when we first came in and saw adults dressed up as 100 year olds. Mr. Mike was hilarious and everyone thought he was an old lady." -Orla "In the K/1 they got trail mix. Seeing people dressed up as old people for the hundredth day of school was fun. From the 100th day of school to Valentine's Day the love monster comes every day in Ms. Fayle’s room. In third grade math they did a hundred foot challenge and guessed where they would end up." -Colton

Pie in the Face
Join us on the 14th!
We have had so many students donate to the Pie in the Face contest that we have decided to do the finale at the Doty all school meeting on the 14th of February. At this meeting we will also conduct our annual Valentine exchange. We assign a "Valentine person" to each student and staff and hand make Valentines for each other. The exchange is extremely popular as we display the valentines for a week so everyone can see them (names are hidden).
This year we are inviting parents to come and watch the exchange which will end with the highly anticipated pie in the face!
If you wish to join us, we will be starting at 2:00 on the 14th in the gym.
