Blazer Bulletin for Sept 25-29

Dear Trail Blazer Community
Hello Blazer Nation!
Last week brought a whirlwind of excitement to the Trail, with lots of thrilling activities, ranging from the stunning opening of Swim and Dive, Drumline Competition, HOCO Pep Rally and HOCO dance. I want to extend my appreciation to the entire Blazer community for your support and participation. What a great time to be a Blazer!
A big shout out to our football team for their performance under the Friday Night Lights. While the outcome was not what we wanted, they showed up, played hard and helped create a wonderful atmosphere.
Frisco ISD Marching Band Showcase
The event will begin at 6:30pm at the Ford Center. General Admission seats are $5 and can be purchased here. Frisco ISD staff can receive 1 free general admission ticket using their FISD email address and the passcode FISDStaff (click Have a passcode?).
HOSA Blood Drive
HOSA’s semi-annual blood drive will be happening Wednesday, September 27th . Each donor will have the opportunity to donate one pint of blood which can save up to three lives, whether it be patients of nearby hospitals or victims of unfortunate disasters. Community members, teachers, and students are able to donate. Seniors who donate twice in their senior year (or have an adult donate for them) are eligible for a honor cord from Carter blood care.
Must be at least 16 years old to give blood. Students under the age of 17 require parental consent.
16-Year-old Donor Permission Form (English) (Spanish)
Save time by completing your health questionnaire (QuickScreen) before arriving to the blood drive. QuickScreen must be completed on the day of your donation.
Contact Amanda Mosier at mosiera@friscoisd.org for info.
Associated Risks
Sometimes people who donate blood notice a few minor side effects including feeling faint, lightheaded, dizzy, etc. due to the blood and fluid taken. However, these symptoms usually resolve quickly as your body immediately begins working to replace the lost fluid and red blood cells. There are steps you can take to improve your donation experience.
Before donating
Have a good night’s sleep the night before
Eat healthy foods (avoid fatty foods like hamburgers, fries, ice cream)
Drink EXTRA fluids in the days and morning leading up to your donation (drink an extra 16oz of water just before your appointment)
After donating
Sit and rest for a few minutes
Drink lots of fluids
Avoid strenuous physical activity such as hard workouts, heavy lifting, or athletics/games for the rest of the day
Consume iron-rich foods (red meat, fish, poultry, beans, spinach, iron-fortified cereals, raisins, and more) to help your body replace the lost blood.
CDC Substitutes
The Child Development Center (FISD very own internal child care center) is in dire need of additional substitutes to add to our list. The CDC must maintain its own list of subs (instead of using ESS) as the state requires specific preservice training and additional background checks to work in a licensed child care in Texas. Pay is provided for training and the really cute kiddos are a great perk!

**- An individual cannot be both an employee of FISD and ESS, so current PK-12 school substitutes are not an option.

Reminders
PSAT
All FISD 10th and 11th grade students are automatically registered to take the PSAT/NMSQT, free of charge, during the school day on October 4, 2023. The PSAT helps students identify academic areas of strength and growth, as well as prepare for college entrance exams like the SAT. The PSAT/NMSQT is also the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program for students in 11th grade and the National Recognition Programs for both 10th and 11th grade
This fall the PSAT/NMSQT will be administered in a new digital format that will provide an overall easier testing experience for students. (The SAT is going digital in spring 2024.) Your child will take the PSAT/NMSQT on October 4th using their own school-issued device.
All FISD 9th and 12th grade students will have late arrival and report to campus at 12:45pm. There are no 1st or 2nd period classes on high school campuses or at the CTE Center.
The PSAT/NMSQT will be administered on campus on Wednesday, October 4 to 10th and 11th graders only.
Testing will begin at 9:00 AM sharp and anyone who arrives late will not be allowed to test.
Students taking the PSAT are not permitted to access cell phone or smart watches during the exam. Devices must be powered off and stored in a designated location during the exam. If a student is observed with any prohibited electronic device in the testing room or during a break their scores will be canceled.
Students will receive an email September 29 with their testing room number.
Students with late arrival 1A must arrive by 9:00 AM.
Students who will miss a dual credit course due to the PSAT must communicate with their professor prior to test day.
Students may bring the following on test day:
pencils
your own calculator but must be on the approved calculator list
Desmos graphing calculator is embedded desmos.com/calculator
snacks and drinks (may only be consumed during official breaks)
For additional PSAT test day and transportation information, please see the Frisco ISD website.
For questions about the PSAT, please contact CTF Facilitator, Lauren Phillips at PhillipsL@friscoisd.org.
