A Note From the Principal's Desk:

I can't believe it is November already and it has been a busy fall! November is Family Engagement Month in the state of Florida and we would like to encourage our families to get involved at Southside. We have various ways for you to support your student(s) and our school.

Attend School Events:

We have had an exciting summer and fall with the Summer Bash, School Orientations, Open Houses, Doughnut with a Grownup, Fall Festival and a few fall concerts. Our next family event is our Fall Movie Night!! On November 22nd gates will open at 5:30 for an approximate 6:20-6:30 movie start time. This is a fundraiser for our school, but we also want to give time for families to gather and spend time together as a school family. We hope to see you there!

Volunteer:

We can always use helping hands to complete projects, chaperone trips or give a helping hand for special events. Please follow the volunteering and visiting protocol listed on our school website and in each parent newsletter to obtain your clearance. Engaging with your child's school through volunteering is a great way to spend your time and gives back in more ways than you can imagine. Also, don't forget to log your hours in Powerschool, or submit them to the front desk to be logged for you!

Help Recruit Families:

In addition to completing surveys to help us know how to improve (worth volunteer hours) you can also get involved in helping promote your child's school. Consider leaving us a positive review on social media such as Facebook, or on sites such as Yelp, Greatschools.org or niche.org. Involved positive families are proactive in searching for schools and they are the families that we want to recruit for our school. Helping spread the word about the great things happening at Southisde helps our school maintain healthy enrollment numbers and a healthy budget to support learning. Consider taking time to leave a positive review and then log your hours or print the review and submit to the front desk and we can log your hours.

Donations: It takes time to shop and deliver (which also count as volunteer hours )- you can self log, or submit receipts for us to log your hours. We always need laundered hand me down uniforms, kleenex, Clorox wipes, baggies of all sizes, pre-sharpened pencils, etc. We will be setting up an Amazon wish list for items we would like to support our classrooms too. Please consider reviewing our Principal & PTC ask letter which I have posted again below. We have had over $2500 in donations and one donor took care of the entire STEM budget!

PTC: Our parent teacher committee is open to all southside parents/guardians and we meet monthly to plan special events, help with fundraising and figure out suggestions to improve southside. Currently we meet at 8:00am, but hope to offer some evening meetings as well. Participating in a PTC meeting also counts as volunteer hours! Next Meeting 11/21 8:00am

SAC: Our school now has a School Accountability Committee. This is a new and forming group, therefore all meetings are open to all interested parents. The committee digs deeper into how to support the school through acadmics, attendance and climate: all levers in how to improve a school for students. We review and provide input on the school improvement plan and budgetary items. We can always use your parent perspective and ideas to improve academics, attendance and climate at Southside. Attending a SAC meeting also counts as volunteer time! Next Meeting 11:25 8:00am

Other items of note:

  • We will be adding 3rd grade tutoring for December & 1st/2nd grade tutoring for January
  • We did not have enough girls to tryout on 10/30 to field a women's basketball team, but will try again next year.
  • Spring soccer tryouts will be here before you know it, obtain your sports physical now!
  • Ms. Leon took a position elsewhere as a new professional challenge, we wish her the best and will miss her amazing work and positive attitude she brought to Southside. We have several qualified applicants and will be filling the music position soon.
  • We are currently hiring for a middle school science teacher as well.
  • Middle School parents, please make sure you are monitoring your students' social media activity as not thinking before they post can have unintended consequences and young adults need supervision and guidance.

Thank you for being involved parents and families and we look forward to further partnering with you at Southside!

We are having to hire additional personnel to supervise students left behind on Early Release Days, as after-care is full on most days. After the 30 min pick up window, a $15 fee will be assessed. Elementary pick up is 12:45-1:15. Middle School (w/ elem. siblings) is 1:00-1:30.

On Oct. 30th, we had 42 children still waiting at 1:45pm, a full hour after school dismissed and when the staff was in a faculty meeting and professional development session. Aftercare can not absorb 42 late pick ups. We will be billing the $15 late fee and hiring additional staff/substitute teachers for Early Release Days.

K & 1st switching time

To do what is best for students academically, we are making a switch of two grade levels' lunch times. K and 1st grade teachers proposed a switch as they each had about a 20 min period in their day where it was difficult to use well for instruction due to transitions.

Starting Tuesday, 10/22, Kinder lunch will be at 11:03- 11:28 a.m & 1st grade lunch will be at 11:26- 11:51 a.m. Please keep this in mind when planning for a lunch visit!
