News and Notes News and Notes

We had such a fantastic first few days of school! It was wonderful to see scholars' and families smiling faces on the playground for day 1! We are off to a great start learning routines and procedures for school. New this year, we have 3 lunch and recess periods to be able to have more space to play!

Our top priority is for students to feel safe and cared for each day they enter Heather Hill School. Our staff does an amazing job of forming relationships and building community, so students know they are honored and can take risks in learning. One way we do this is by focusing on clear expectations and on social-emotional learning. See below for more details on some of the PBIS Cool Tools we are learning for expectations. Please continue to reinforce these at home so we can continue to partner together for success for all students!

This week we will begin NWEA assessments in reading and math for 1st-5th grades. Testing begins on Wednesday for all students and will continue through the beginning of next week. Kindergarten and 1st grade students will be assessed using Aimsweb. This is a quick check of skills in reading and math. Our teams use all of this information to determine the best ways to support students in standards-mastery throughout the year, as well as to monitor growth and progress. Families will be mailed assessment results after the window is closed so you can see how your child compares to their peers across the nation. If you have any questions about these assessments, please reach out to your child's teacher!

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) at HH

We use several resources to enhance social-emotional learning (SEL) in District 161. Second Step lessons introduce real-life situations that may arise and strategies students can use to strengthen coping, foster a growth mindset, and create a positive school community.

Capturing Kids Hearts is a character-building program that focuses on strengthening and building relationships. Our August and September focus is "Empathy: Connect with Heart."

PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) establishes programs and systems to provide proactive and universal supports to all students. PBIS also helps us build additional supports for students who need more learning in SEL to be successful. Our PBIS focuses for August and September are Way to Play and Way to Learn.
