Message from Nicole Pease, Principal
Hello DCS famililes, it has been a lovely week! Justin Bentley-Melle has been here with Art. He had the students working on creating bird models to be part of the Children and the Arts parade in May. The excitement about One School One Book continued and we had many parents join us for lunch today where we celebrated those students that have been working on illustrating vocabulary from the book as well ast those that completed the Scavenger Hunt. It was lovely to have lunch together! I hope you have a wonderful weekend, Mother Nature is not done with winter yet! Nicole
Fun in Kindergarten and 1
What a busy couple of weeks we’ve had! Engineering traps in an attempt to catch the wee leprechaun was a highlight as well as a St. Patricks Day scavenger hunt around the school deciphering riddles! In the end, there was gold to be had.
Despite the cold weather and snow, we began a spring science unit learning about oviparous animals- animals that hatch from eggs! Mrs. Garland was kind enough to let us have a look at the 3rd grade incubator and we all made predictions about when we think the chicks will hatch.
Does March really come in like a lion and out like a lamb? Our class is taking data to make that determination. We'll let you know the results in another week or so.
Smiles in Second
St. Patrick's Day sure was fun beginning the day with the antics of Lucky the Leprechaun. The students found evidence of him all over the building, and our room was full of green footprints on our tables, desks, windows, etc. He even messed with our green chairs and green manipulatives! We did a little Lucky Charm graphing to celebrate the day as well as write about, "Who is worth more than gold to me?" The students chose special people and gave excellent reasons why they chose them.
This week we have started math with one "Estimystery" each day. The students have to estimate how many objects are in different-sized jars (picture on the smart board). They then have to narrow down their guess once they're given five clues. It's an excellent exercise to develop their number sense and deductive reasoning. Also, second graders are becoming pros at adding numbers to 1,000 using the standard algorithm. Subtraction is next!
Finally, we have been enjoying talking about The Mouse and the Motorcycle! We have a little trivia session each morning where the students have to hit their imaginary buzzers if they know the answer. This has been great fun. Kudos to families for staying on schedule with the reading. Your students are listening and retaining what they're reading! To go along with the book, our class is writing, "Rodent Reports" which we'd love to share with you at the literacy lunch on Friday.
Terrific in Third
The terrific third graders have been busy focusing on Birds and The Mouse and the Motorcycle these past few weeks. With our bird unit underway, we had four super fun lessons with Jamie from the Harris Center on beaks and feet, migration, and looking at the birdwatching data we have collected. The children dissected owl pellets and discovered the diet of owls. Also, they went out birding, listening to bird songs. During Reading Groups, the children read and discussed non-fiction texts about birds, learning all about their adaptations, habitats, and diets. As a guest speaker, Zach Pease visited and shared his extensive nest collection! Thank you to Zach for coming! Thank you to Mrs. Pease for sharing her Bird Bingo and Forrest for sharing his Bird Memory. The children loved learning the names of some fancy birds through enjoyable competitive games.
The class is incubating chicken eggs to learn about bird life cycles organically. The children wonder about the process, and each has a question they will answer using the Scientific Method. The children monitor the eggs daily to ensure the correct incubator temperature and humidity. They also learn about the chicks' appearance in the egg each day. The whole school is enjoying the project by guessing how many eggs will hatch. Fingers crossed!
The class plays a daily trivia game about The Mouse and The Motorcycle to challenge their comprehension and recall facts from the story. The children love the story, and they either read it themselves nightly or listen to the staff read to them. They like to report who read the chapter the night before!
Famulous in Fourth and Fifth
As we enter Spring, the 4th and 5th grade has been oozing with creativity and collaboration!
In Science, we had time with the Harris Center in which the 4th grade was able to explore pelts, bones and jars of scat to better know the white tailed deer and other New Hampshire mammals. And we build models to explore energy, force, collisions and energy transfer.
In Art, we were building puppets for the Children of the Arts parade that show our DCS pride and creativity. These are sculptures made from a variety of materials and they look amazing.
Both the 4th and the 5th grades are pushing on through the math curriculum and having wonderful growth. The 4th grade has practiced using models and the algorithm to solve 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication (23 X 41). The 5th grade had been adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators and mixed numbers as well as applying mental math skills to compare fractions to /12 and a whole to make decisions.
BEST of all, we took part in a 4th - 12th grade choir! It was a voluntary event and the students who participated were brave and awesome!
Art at DCS
For our sculpture project we looked at works by Louise Nevelson, Henry Moore, Frederic Remington, and Alexander Calder. We considered balance, symmetry, form, style, and purpose. Students interpreted this year’s Children and the Arts theme, “Birds of a Feather'' as they designed raven sculptures.
I look forward to seeing how these fanciful creations continue to progress when I return for the week of May 6th.
The Children and the Arts organization has invited students to carry their birds of the feather sculptures in the festival parade.
The 2024 Children and the Arts Festival will be held on Saturday, May 18th. Please visit childrenandthearts.org for more information.
I look forward to seeing
Thank you for supporting creativity!
