SCS Weekly Newsletter 12/16/24
A fun week coming up!
From the Principal's Desk:
Dear Salisbury Families:
As is our recent tradition, the last week before Winter Break features three great school activities: an All-School Concert from our Band and Chorus students, the Holiday Dollar Store, and All-School Skating at Middlebury's Memorial Sports Center! Kids have a blast choosing items for others, and then putting on the skates to hit the ice! There are a few details I figured would be good to cover.
Band/Chorus Concert: Families and Community members are invited to our All-School Band and Chorus concert, which will be held in our gym at 2:00 on Tuesday. Band and Chorus is open to our 4th and 5th graders, and they've been working very hard this year! We're excited to hear them! Community audience members can enter through our "community entrance" beginning at 1:45.
Holiday Dollar Store: Students go to our "Holiday Dollar Store", which has hundreds and hundreds of fun things donated by community members, and they choose up to 5 things to take home and give to a family member during the winter holiday season. FOSCS volunteers come run the store and wrap the presents, which the children will bring home in shopping bags kindly donated to us by Hannaford Supermarket. Thanks to everyone in our community for taking part in making this great day happen!
Note: I know that part of the tradition is having students pay $1 per item, which is great and is a little bit of a fundraiser for student activities. However, we want all students to take part, so please just let your child's teacher or Donna know if this cost is difficult; we will give your child dollars for the store.
Skating: This event is really fun, and this year we are excited because we are going to have an additional 14 sets of stacked milk crates for learning skaters to use, (thank you Monument Farms!). Students will be able to rent skates (free of cost- the school covers it), but each skater will need to bring a helmet. Some kids have hockey helmets, but lots of (probably most of...) students use bike helmets and skiing helmets. I honestly think it's a good idea to send in the helmet on Wednesday or Thursday, so that you definitely don't forget on Friday. If you don't have your child's name on it already, we will put some hockey tape on them label them. We'll store them overnight if you send them early.
If you are able to lend a helmet or two, please say so when you answer the questions that are in the Google Form that is linked a little later in the newsletter. We'll label them, keep track of them, and get them back to you. Also note that you can pick up your child in Middlebury after skating if you want- just make note of that when you are filling in the info in the Google Form.
What a fun time of year! Have a great week,
Bjarki

SCS Announcements:
SCS is going skating, but we need your child's info!
We are excited to announce that the whole school will be going skating the afternoon before break! On Friday, December 20th, we will all take the bus to Middlebury's Memorial Sports Center, where we will skate from 1 to 2 o'clock. Helmets are required, we can rent skates, and we could use a few volunteers!
To do this well, we need some information for your child to attend. Please take a few minutes to fill out the Google Form linked below. Please fill out 1 form per child in your household that will be attending.
Holiday Dollar Store: Seeking Volunteers and Donations!
Seeking a few volunteers for the Holiday Dollar Store! A message from FOSCS:
Happy last week before break, which we know is a busy time for everyone. We are just reaching out as we could still use some additional help for the holiday dollar store on Wednesday this week.
We have several empty slots and the more people we have to assist, the smoother this works out for all the kiddos to bring their presents home the same day and ensure the store is successful.
Please take a moment to check the sign up here and if you are able to help out anywhere, even if it is not for the entire time slot, we would truly appreciate it!
Thank you,
FOSCS
SCS seeking donations for the Holiday Dollar Store!
On Wednesday, December 18th we will hold our annual "Holiday Dollar Store"! At that event each student gets to choose 5 gifts for friends or family, and adult volunteers wrap them for gift giving over the winter holiday season. We can still use donations! Please see the note from FOSCS below!
SCS News:
All School Meeting: 4th Graders share a citizenship project!
As part of the 4th grade unit "How We Organize Ourselves", 4th grade students explored the concept of citizenship, both within the founding documents of the United States and within the lives we lead everyday. At our last all-school meeting, 4th graders shared some of their learning with other students. It is always great to see students teaching each other- and being good citizens!
A CLIf visit with author and illustrator Jason Chin!
As part of our CLIf "Year of the Book", we welcomed in author and Illustrator Jason Chin. Jason shared his stories of growing up and realizing how much he loved to draw and create stories. He read his non-fiction book "Your Place in the Universe", and even treated us to a live demonstration of some of his art techniques. Check out his books- they are AMAZING! Thank you Jason, and thank you CLIf!

Fun Feature! Time-Lapse Picture Project.
New for 24-25: The Time-Lapse Picture Project
This year, we thought it would be fun to chronicle the changes of the season at Salisbury Community School by taking the same picture, at the same time, from the same spot, every week. At the end of the year it will hopefully be a fun thing to look at and share!
