York High School Weekly Memo
Hi Everyone,
I hope you are having a great week! We are finishing up our AP exams tomorrow and are looking forward to our prom on Saturday evening. It is going to be wonderful!
Last Friday, our baseball team joined our student-athletes who were competing in the Special Olympics at Noble High School. It was an awesome day!
Honors Biology teacher, Lindsay Nichols, was awarded a YEF Grant for the state's very first GCSAA First Green program event. Students in the Honors Biology class participated in a field experience on Tuesday this past week as they traveled to Cape Neddick Country Club, where our students rotated through a series of interactive learning stations.
First Green, a program of the GCSAA Foundation, helps connect students to the environment, sustainability, and future career pathways in a meaningful and engaging way. Through experiential STEAM-based learning from nationally recognized professionals in the field, students gained a behind-the-scenes look at the science, technology, environmental stewardship, and teamwork that go into maintaining the course.
Students rotated through a variety of stations, which focused on:
- Water quality testing
- Soil science + soil testing
- Measuring green speed
- Wetting agents + moisture meters for monitoring water content
- A driving range session with the golf pro
- Environmental sustainability + career exploration
According to Ms. Nichols, "Our students were fantastic, and it was such a meaningful learning event for them...It was certainly a fabulous day of 'real science'"
Enjoy the rest of your week, and as always, if you need anything or have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out.
Thanks,
Amanda
Prom is on Saturday!!!
In partnership with YORKWISE and the York Police Department, to help foster a healthy and safe prom, we will be having all students and guests entering the prom take a breathalyzer test (similar to the Homecoming Dance in the fall). Mr. Hodsdon and Dr. Suttie will be administering the tests. If students do not pass, then parents will be called to pick up their student. If students refuse to take the test, they will not be allowed admittance to the dance, and parents will be called to pick them up. If parents have any questions regarding this decision, please feel free to reach out to Dr. Suttie. All bags and jackets will be subject to searches as well.
Here is the schedule for our underclass final exams (grades 9-11). Students will get more information from their classroom teachers regarding assessments. Our buses will run at regular times, and students do not need to attend study halls.
Spring Testing Updates
Thank you to all of our students who have already completed their NWEA and MTYA. If they missed a day, we will be providing make-up opportunities. Ms. Monaco will reach out to your student to schedule. I-Ready testing will be taking place next Monday and Tuesday. Students (grades 9-11) should plan to bring their computers fully charged and ready to go.
