Nuggets from Nurse Jill

Hello Navigators and Parents!

As we enter the second 9 weeks, I wanted to send a reminder about COVID policy for campus.

Due to the pandemic and maintaining student, teacher and staff safety we are required by the district and TEA to stick to strict policy and procedures regarding when an ill student can return to campus.

Our goal is to get students back to campus as quickly and as safely as possible. When your student is kept home for illness or is sent home from the school, there are 3 options to choose from to return to campus.

Pick ONE option:

  1. 10 days self-isolation since symptoms began AND improvement in symptoms AND 24 hours fever free (without the use of fever reducing medication) *ALL 3 must be met with this option.
  2. The student is cleared by a physician to return to school with an alternate diagnosis listed on the doctor’s note OR a statement explaining they have no concern for COVID. Also, symptoms must be improved or resolved for 24 hours.
  3. The student has had a negative PCR test result indicating symptoms were not due to COVID-19. A rapid antigen test will NOT be accepted. Also, symptoms must be improved or resolved for 24 hours.

Curative is offering FREE COVID testing. This is a mouth swab test that the district is accepting results from for return to school. See the flyer here for locations and to schedule an appointment.

Because Hays County is considered to be an area of high-community spread, parents must ensure they do not send a child to campus if the child has any ONE of the following COVID-19 symptoms:

* Temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher when taken by mouth

* Sore throat

* Congestion or runny nose

* New, uncontrolled cough that causes difficulty breathing or for students with a chronic allergic/asthmatic cough, a change in their cough from baseline.

* Diarrhea, nausea/vomiting, or abdominal pain

* New onset of severe headache, especially with a fever

* New loss of taste or smell

* New onset of fatigue or muscle/body aches

If your child has any one of the above symptoms, is lab-confirmed with COVID-19 OR has been tested for COVID-19 and is awaiting results, do not send him/her to campus and contact me. Please also do not send your child to school if a household member has tested positive or is awaiting COVID-19 test results.

Campus nurses are your point of contact for all things related to COVID so please reach out if you have questions.

Daily Health Checks

PLEASE check your child for Covid symptoms before sending or dropping your child off at school! This includes:

TEMPERATURE CHECK

*Asking your child how they are feeling

*Look at their face and eyes! This is the FIRST thing we look at when a child is sent to the nurse. Their little eyes will tell you how they are feeling way before symptoms often begin.

If they do not feel well, PLEASE do not send them to school. They can meet with their teacher virtually. If they feel better later in the morning, bring them on in!

CAPTAIN CROWTHER'S CORNER

Ahoy Navigator Parents!

Wow! What a fast week! I believe that all students are placed in their preferred learning environment. We are welcoming approximately 100 students back to in person learning. We are super excited to have more students back with us and we dearly miss our virtual students!

Many of you have asked about Mr. Greene, our crossing guard. He has decided it is time for him to retire for good! He is sad about not seeing the boys and girls AND their parents. He wishes everyone well! We are looking for a new crossing guard. if you are interested, please apply. It is posted on the Hays CISD website.

I hope you all enjoy this beautiful weekend!

It's Gifted and Talented (GT) referral time!

Students who participate in services designed for gifted/talented students will demonstrate skills in self-directed learning, thinking, research, and communication. These skills are often evidenced by the development of innovative products and performances that reflect individuality and creativity. Furthermore, these skills are advanced in relation to students of similar age, experience, or environment.

Hays CISD campuses will accept referrals for gifted and talented services from November 2-30, 2020. Referrals can be made in two different ways. The first option is to complete an online referral atTHIS LINK. The second option is to complete a paper referral. Copies of the paper referral form are available in the front office of each campus and should be returned to the campus counselor.

There will also be three opportunities to learn more about the GT program, referrals and the testing process. If you are interested, please choose a zoom link below that best meets your needs. See you there!

We are so proud of the hard work of our teachers who prepared our students, and students who completed their TELPAS testing. Our students scored 91%!

GUIDANCE AND GROUPS!

In class guidance lessons are being offered to all students pk-5. In addition, Ms. K and Ms. Winn are working with teachers to provide lessons through zoom to our virtual learners. Below you will find the first three topics. In addition, don’t hesitate to utilize the SEL portion of Schoology for additional self-directed lessons, including excellent additional support through Cloud 9. Due to covid protocols, “groups” will look very different. Students will be “check in” only, until some of the precautions are lifted. We want the safety of all students to be priority. Outside mentors, volunteers, and counselors are currently not permitted on campus. However, if you would be interested in MENTORING a student virtually, through zoom, please reach out to me! Mentoring takes 30 minutes a week, can happen during lunchtime, or other times arranged by the teacher. At this time you might play virtual games, tell jokes, draw together, talk, or read together. Studies show that students with mentors are more likely to graduate, are happier in school, are more successful . We’d love to have you. Just email the counselor!

Library News from Ms. Tierney

Changes are coming to library for both virtual and in-person students for the next 9 weeks. Since we have more students coming back in person, library will now be part of the specials rotation. What does that mean for you and your child?

  • Library will be on a six day, A-F rotation, meaning it will fall on a different day of the week each week (unlike the first 9 weeks when it was on a specific day, M-F consistently).
  • To help you and your child remember his/her library book(s) each week, I will send an email reminder the night before his/her library day. NOTE: It’s just a reminder, if your child is NOT done with the book, he/she can renew it without bringing the book(s) back in under he/she is done with it.
  • VIRTUAL LEARNERS: I will continue to have Curbside Library on Mondays and Fridays but I will only be outside to come to deliver to your car on Friday afternoons from 3:30-4:30. If you come to pick up on Mondays, you will need to come into the entranceway of the school to take the books (clearly labeled with student’s name) off the cart marked, “Curbside Library Pick-Up”.
  • Gator Reader Program, a program that encourages students to read with their parents often. The goal is to read 100 books together over the course of the year. Once your kindergartener finishes one sheet, he/she will turn it in, get a small prize and get a new recording sheet. When they complete all 4 sheets, they will have read 100 books and receive the official GATOR READER T-shirt! Here is a link to the letter and recording log.
  • 3rd – 5th Grade Texas Bluebonnet Book Award Books - This is a state book award that students get to vote on if they read at least 5 of the nominees. We have all 20 nominated books in the library and available on Overdrive as e-books and/or audiobooks. Visit the Negley Library page to learn more and watch book trailers for all of the 2020-2021 nominees.
  • You can always check out the library website for great resources as well. Have a great week and you can always email me if you have any questions, Colleen.Tierney@hayscisd.net.

Remember to bring your picture ID - always!

Please remember that ANYTIME you come to school to join your child (other than just dropping off your child at the beginning of the day) you MUST check in at the front office and get your Raptor sticker. To receive a sticker, you must present a photo ID regardless if this is your first time or thousandth time to check in to the school. This is for student safety and for us to know who is on our campus at all times. Thank you for being nice to the front office staff as they enforce this safety measure.

This does not apply to evening activities - just the school day.

TRANSPORTATION TAGS

ALL FAMILIES WILL NEED A TRANSPORTATION TAG IF THEY WILL BE PICKING UP THEIR CHILD FROM CAMPUS.

These tags are super important for picking up your child at dismissal. Each family has a distinct number - it is your family number. Instead of calling out your child's name for all to hear, we call your family number. Each family will receive 2 cards and 3 round discs that need to be attached to your child's backpack. If you need extras for another adult that may be picking up your child , just let our Receptionist, Ms. Goodman know when she gives you your original. There will be a $1.00 charge for extra cards OR to replace a lost card after this initial pick up. This fee is to help us with replacement materials. So - the first ones are FREE, but later on there will be the small charge.

PLEASE EMAIL MS. GOODMAN TO SCHEDULE A TIME TO PICK UP YOUR TRANSPORTATION TAGS or STOP BY THE RECEPTION AREA.

If you are picking up your child in the car rider line, these tags can hang from your passenger side visor using a rubber band or from your rearview mirror. It makes it easy for us to see and call your number. If you do not have your car tag, you will be asked to drive to the front office and present your ID in order to pick up your child.

If you are walking to the school to pick up your child, you will need to show your tag to your child's teacher OR the teacher on duty. They will check the number on the card with the tag attached to your child's backpack before releasing your student to you.
