Busy week for Monarch Girls’ Basketball upon returning from Winter Break

Last Tuesday, the first day back from break, Monarch Girls’ Basketball hosted Holy Family High School. Our Coyotes got off to a good start, leading by double digits going into halftime. The Holy Family Tigers did not give up, which made for an exciting second half for the home team fans as Holy Family got to within 2 points at the beginning of the 4th quarter. While staying composed and united, the Monarch Girls' basketball team stepped up their defense and made clutch free throws to secure the win, 55-47.

The Monarch Girls' Basketball team traveled to Fort Collins on Thursday night to take on Rocky Mountain High School. What Mohi's opponent lacked in skill, they made up for in aggressive physical play. This did not intimidate our Yokes. Rather, Monarch made adjustments and stayed grounded in their game plan. With contributions from all players on the court and high energy from the bench, Monarch got their second win of the week in FoCo, 52-41.

There was no time to rest or prepare for their next game as the Monarch Girls' Basketball team was on the road again Friday night to face Horizon High School. Though the first few minutes had the crowd thinking MoHi would walk away with this, up 11-3, the tide turned quickly. Plagued by early foul trouble for a couple of the starters and what appeared to be a cover over the rim, Monarch found themselves trailing for much of the game and ended up losing to Horizon, 26-37.

Monarch Girls' Basketball JV and C teams remain winless, though the effort and determination are palpable. These girls are coming out to play hard every game, and even though the outcome has not resulted in Ws, the individual improvements and both teams' overall growth are evident.

No time to dwell, just opportunity to learn and improve, for the Monarch Girls' Basketball program has a tough week ahead. It starts this coming Tuesday, on the road, when Monarch plays the highly competitive Mead High School.

Please come help cheer on your Monarch Girls' Basketball teams at the end of the week when they host Erie High School on Friday. The games start with the JV game at 4:00, followed by Varsity at 5:30, and the C team at 7:00.
