Principal's Message

Greetings Sonia Sotomayor Families!

The weather outside is frightful, so bundle up your children before sending them to school. Please remind your child that students must wear snow boots and snow pants to play on the snow hill or field. Please make sure all snow pants, boots, and coats are labeled with your child’s name. We have many, many pieces of winter gear in our Lost and Found. Encourage your child to check it out to claim any missing personal items. Parents are also welcome to come check out the lost and found. We know how expensive these warm winter items can be!

Students have been busy completing the Winter MAP Growth Assessment. The Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) is given in the Fall, Winter and Spring to all Sioux Falls School District elementary schools and is designed to measure student achievement in the moment and growth over time, regardless of grade level. MAP Growth begins with a question at each student’s grade level and adjusts the level of difficulty based on individual performance. You will receive your child’s scores in January. Growth scores provide parents an opportunity to talk to children about setting goals, reading every day to improve reading scores, and using Dreambox daily to increase their math scores. No matter what their beginning or end scores, we would love to see all of our students obtain ‘high growth’ between testing sessions.

After six weeks at home with her new baby boy, Isaiah, our Dean of Students, Mrs. Jess Ries, is officially back! We are so excited! We want to thank Mrs. Heather Conrad for stepping out of the comfort of her gym to assist in the office. She did a fabulous job!

On Friday our specials teachers arranged a service learning project for our students! Over 700 students, staff, and parents worked together throughout the day to create over 70 blankets for Project Warm-Up! Over 1300 blankets are boxed up and ready for delivery to every school building in the SFSD! Blankets will also go to the Ronald McDonald House, Sanford and Avera Children’s Hospitals, Children’s Inn, Child’s Voice, and more! Thank you so much for your support of this project that has distributed over 32,000 blankets to children and families in need across the Sioux Empire and beyond!

Bless you all during this holiday season!

Your principal,

Tracy Vik

Notes from the Office

PASI Happenings

We need host families!

We are currently seeking host families for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year. We have 16 interns who will be coming to our Spanish Immersion Program next year. Being a host family is a wonderful opportunity to open your home and your heart to a student from another country. It allows you to learn about a different culture and make a lasting impact on the intern as well as your family. As a host family, you will provide the intern with a safe and comfortable place to live and study, as well as a few other essentials. Your willingness to welcome a student into your home will be greatly appreciated, as it will provide them with a comfortable and familiar environment during their time abroad. Fill out this form to inquire.

Ana Azumatan-SPED Education Assistant

I was born in Guatemala. I have lived in the United States since the year 2000 with my husband Luis. We have lived in Florida, California, and finally South Dakota where we raised our family. I have three children who are already young adults. I graduated as a teacher in Escuintla, Guatemala and worked there for three years. Once I moved here, I never thought about teaching again. However, when this opportunity presented itself to me, I was very happy to pursue my dream of teaching, which I never imagined would be possible again.

35th Annual Teacher of the Year Nominations

Dr. John Harris served as superintendent of the Sioux Falls School District from 1968-1992. Dr. Harris led the school system with compassion and integrity, touching the lives of thousands of students, teachers and employees, and guiding the system to be one of the finest in the country. He is remembered for his gentleness, humility, graciousness, professionalism, intelligence, and his sincere interest in people. He lived his philosophy that human contacts are the key element to education.

The Sioux Falls School District is proud of our staff and teachers for their commitment to our children and encompassing the same values and passions as Dr. Harris! Each year the Sioux Falls Public Schools and Vern Eide Motorcars jointly sponsor this prestigious award, so please lift up and nominate a deserving teacher by clicking the link below!
