Dear Flower Valley Community,

It was a wonderful, sunny week at FVES! One of the highlights was a fun, interactive assembly hosted by Cantare. Our students sang and danced through Latin America during this experience. Take a look at some pictures from the event below. A special thank you to Ms. Benavides for organizing this and to our PTA for funding the event. What a memorable time!

We have a lot of exciting school events coming up! This week, students will be participating in an assembly focused on standing up against bullying. Students will also be enjoying the book fair, and we will have our annual Math Night Thursday starting at 6:00. We hope to see you there!

This week's newsletter contains important information about our upcoming Community Conversation. Please complete the RSVP linked below in the newsletter. We have also included information about our annual Harvest Festival and Mental Health Awareness Week. We are looking for volunteers to support the Harvest Festival field day activities. Please reach out to Mr. Taubman if you are interested in volunteering for Harvest Festival.

I hope you have a restful weekend.

With Firefly Pride!

Dr. Fish

Important Parking Reminder Important Parking Reminder

During school hours, we ask that you park in our parking lot if you are coming into the school or picking up or dropping off children. Please avoid parking directly out front of the school where the yellow curb is marked. This area is for emergency vehicles and buses. We understand that sometimes parking can be challenging, but there are typically 2-3 parking spaces in our lot at most times during the day. If there are no empty spaces in the lot, you may park along the white curb across from the main entrance for a quick pick up or drop off.

Mental Health Awareness Week Mental Health Awareness Week

Each year, Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW) provides an opportunity for schools to engage students, staff, and families in conversations around the importance of mental health, resiliency, and strategies on how to cope when struggles arise in our lives. Mental health is essential to everyone’s overall health and well-being. MCPS and FVES will be recognizing Mental Health Awareness Week October 21st through October 25th. During the week, FVES will be talking about ways that students can take good care of their mental health. Taking care of yourself includes accepting where you are and building yourself up. We are able to grow stronger and can navigate uncertainty when we love and support ourselves. By prioritizing our own well-being and implementing proactive strategies, we can cultivate a culture of mental wellness that benefits the entire school community. Let's seize this opportunity to nurture minds and hearts, fostering resilience and compassion that aligns with our school motto of Be Bright, Be Kind, and Be You! Below are a few of the activities and topics we will be focusing on during Mental Health Awareness Week.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: We would love to have parent volunteers for our mini field day activities. If you are available to volunteer for this fun event, please email Mr. Taubman at Scott_D_Taubman@mcpsmd.org.

Our annual Harvest Festival is right around the corner! Let’s get ready to have some fun, show our Firefly school pride, and help out our community! Our Fireflies will be collecting canned goods the week of October 28th-November 1st to help support those in need in our community. Students will also be preparing for our school spirit parade by decorating FVES themed harvest collection wagons (lunch carts) to show their school pride and to collect canned goods the day of the parade. Students are encouraged to show their school pride by wearing our school colors, spirit wear, flowers, and/or fireflies. We are looking forward to providing an opportunity for our students to enjoy time celebrating with one another, show their school spirit, and support our community. See the schedule below.

  • Date: November 1st
  • Mini Field Day Fun with Mr. Taubman (Various Times during the Day)

  • Parade Time: 2-2:30

  • Party Time: 2:30-3:10

In the coming days, your child’s homeroom teacher will be reaching out for donations of food, party crafts and supplies, paper products, and school spirit float decorations - all of the blue, yellow, firefly, and flower decorations you can make or donate. Students will be using their class lunch carts as their harvest collection wagons. Items will be collected as an entire grade level and will be evenly distributed amongst all homerooms. We appreciate any donations you are able to provide.

We welcome volunteers for the party and the field day activities. Sign-up sheets will be coming out soon from the teachers and from Mr. Taubman. We also welcome everyone to cheer on our students at the FVES Harvest Parade! The path for the parade is below.

Please remember that Halloween costumes are not allowed in school; however, students are encouraged to wear school colors and really do it up with school spirit for our Harvest Festival!

Parade Route:

  • Parents can stand along the route to take pictures. Please do not stop your child on the parade route.

  • If it rains, we will have the parade inside for the children.

  • After the parade, students will return to their classrooms for their fall harvest parties.

  • Students will be dismissed for the day at the normal time.

  • If you would like your child to participate in an alternative activity instead of the parade, please email your child’s teacher. After the parade, all children will join their classmates for the Fall Harvest Party.

We are looking forward to a fabulous harvest celebration!

Parent and caregiver volunteers support the overall success of Flower Valley. We welcome volunteers and are truly grateful for the ways you support our school each and every day. Some volunteer opportunities include serving as a mystery reader in class, sharing information about your career or hobby via a class presentation or visit, supporting lunch and recess, chaperoning field trips, supporting in-school events, and so much more!

If you are interested in serving as a volunteer, please see the information below and contact Mrs. Atanda at Jennifer_T_Atanda@mcpsmd.org. Volunteer clearance lasts for 3 years. Many volunteers who completed the training upon returning to in person learning three years ago need to complete the training again.
