October Counselor Corner
Dear Families,
October is already here—time moves so quickly! We are excited to launch our Fall small groups for kindergarteners and first graders soon, as well as the ROX program for our fifth-grade girls.
For the past month, we have had the opportunity to present to each class recess expectations and how to respond to tricky situations. If your child finds themselves in a situation that they feel they can’t resolve, we encourage them to reach out to an adult in the building for support.
Tied in with our district Profile of an Engaged Learner - skilled communicators and the American School Counselor Association Mindsets and Behavior Domains, we will be focusing on building our emotional vocabulary and skills to express feelings and solve conflicts. Some of the books we will use with the younger grades are “The Feelings Book” by Todd Parr, “A to Z Do You Ever Feel Like Me?” by Bonnie Hausman and Sandi Fellman, and “The Color Monster” by Anna Lienas.
Throughout the school year, we receive valuable resources from The Kids Mental Health Foundation at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
This month's resource highlights an important topic: “A tough (but needed) talk regarding How to Talk to Kids About Suicide.” The provided link includes guidance specifically tailored for children under 12.
Be Well,
Jean Allocco and Katie Widing, School Counselors
Dogs on the Property
This fall we have seen more and more dogs accompanying families during pick-up and drop-off times. While we love to see our students’ furry friends, we also want to remind families that dogs are not permitted on school property. If you choose to walk your dog to pick-up/drop-off, please wait for your student off of school grounds.

Updates from PE
Welcome Back to PE
We are SO excited for another fun year of Physical Education at Tremont! Our goal is simple: move our bodies, learn new skills, be kind, try our best, and HAVE FUN!
⚽ We kicked off our soccer unit this week! Students are working on dribbling, ball control, passing, kicking, and teamwork through lots of games and activities.
A quick reminder: Tennis shoes are a must on PE days so everyone can move and play safely!
We’re looking forward to an awesome year of moving, learning, laughing, and making memories with our Tremont Lions! 🦁💪
Jones Swing Space Informational Meetings
Jones swing space informational meetings
If the November 3 ballot issue funding the second phase of the master plan is approved by voters, Jones Middle School would undergo a major renovation and rebuilding project. That work would tentatively begin in the spring / summer of 2028 — and, because of the scope of the project, Jones students would need to learn in alternate locations for approximately 2 ½ to 3 years, beginning with the 2028-2029 school year. This would impact students currently in grades 2-6 who would be attending Jones during that time. We know that is a significant change for students and families, and we want to make sure you have an opportunity to learn more about what that would look like and ask questions.
Families of students currently in grades 2-6 at Barrington, Tremont, Wickliffe and Jones are invited to attend one of two swing space informational meetings.
Friday, September 18: 11:00 a.m. at the Bob Crane Community Center

Building tour opportunities
On November 3, residents will vote on a combined operating levy and bond issue that would maintain the district’s current educational programming and fund the second phase of the facilities master plan, which calls for rebuilding Hastings Middle School and Burbank Early Childhood School as well as renovating and rebuilding Jones Middle School.
As residents consider Issue 7, we are providing opportunities to get a first-hand look inside each of these schools. All three buildings will be open on Wednesday, September 23 and Thursday October 8, with tours beginning at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.

September is Suicide Prevention Month
Talking openly about suicide can save lives. Suicide prevention begins before someone is in crisis, and everyone can play a role by learning the warning signs, supporting those who may be struggling and knowing where to turn for help. It's important to know the risk factors and also to build protective factors. Protective factors can be supported by practicing strength at school and at home. Feel free to try the Sources of Strength family conversation prompts at home.
If you or someone you know needs support, talk with your school counselor or call or text 988 any time, day or night, to connect with the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Families can also find suicide prevention and mental health resources at www.uaschools.org/familyresources.
Sometimes, starting a conversation can make all the difference. It’s always OK to ask for help or reach out to support someone else.
