Vietnam Veteran, Lt. Neil Dolan, visits MRHS
Mrs. Doyle's Honors American Literature class recognized our veterans before the holiday weekend by listening intently to our friend and Vietnam Veteran, Lt. Neil Dolan. Thanks to those teachers who allowed a student or two of yours to join us that afternoon, and thanks to Ms. Sheptyck for bringing her AP US History class. Our students were terrific and respectful; several came up to Lt. Dolan at the end to shake his hand and thank him for his service. Lt. Dolan connected much of his story with that of Tim O'Brien's in the novel, The Things They Carried, because both men were in "Nam" in the same area at the same time and dealing with much of the same horrors. We can't thank Lt. Neil Dolan enough for his service in the late 1960s and for his current service to our students. When the students actually touch shrapnel, which created most of the injuries in the war, and look at a photo of Lt. Dolan, called the "Old man" or "Pops" because he was considered old at 22, the war is no longer just a chapter in a textbook or a Hollywood movie.
Poster highlighting computer science program at MRHS
Mr. Oldach and Ms. Callahan presented the poster below to the MIT/DESE Pace Two session at the Digital Literacy and Computer Science conference. The poster summarizes some of our success over the past 3 years in building the computer science program. We have received over $6,000 in grants from MIT to help expand the program. One of the outcomes was the computer science recruiting video that has won a number of awards.
Creative Writing class visitor
Many thanks to Lily Holmes and her tortoise, Scooter, for visiting the Creative Writing class and a Sandscript meeting this week! The photos show the excitement of Sandscript members. Scooter was the subject of a writing prompt in both the class and the meeting: "Imagine you are Scooter and you see the world the way she sees it. You move as slow as she does. Write what that's like." Maybe we all need to look up more and slow down a bit.
Students volunteer at Family Table Collaborative
On Wednesday, Monomoy students Thomas Chase, Anthony Coleman, Andrew Lagreze, Nick Hadden, Lee Stockwell, Gavin Varley, Joey Ventura, and Troy Yates participated in a day of community service with students from Cape Cod Regional Technical High School and Sturgis High School at the Family Table Collaborative. The students spent the day clearing brush, weeding, raking, and planting.
