Greetings TVMS Families,

We had an amazing turnout yesterday evening for our TVMS & HHES Health and Wellness Fair, with over 500 people in attendance! Families had the opportunity to connect with a variety of community partners and vendors, while enjoying fun activities and delicious food.

Thank you to all the families and staff who came out to support the event. A special thank you goes to our media specialist, Ms. Wendy McNeill, who took the lead in partnering with Hanover Hills Elementary School to organize such a successful and engaging evening.

Wishing everyone a relaxing and restful spring break! We look forward to welcoming students back on Tuesday, April 22nd, as we gear up to finish the school year strong!

Have a wonderful Spring Break.

Advanced Debate Team Wins! Advanced Debate Team Wins!

On Monday, April 7th, the TVMS Advanced Debate Team participated in the Howard County Middle School Debate Competition. The resolution this year was "Be it resolved that animal testing for scientific and commercial purposes be banned in the United States." We spent many months preparing for the competition by researching both sides of the issue, preparing opening and closing speeches, determining questions to ask the opposing side and questions that we might be asked by the opposing side, and formulating our rebuttal. Each school is assigned another middle school to argue against in the morning and another team in the afternoon. We argued on the affirmative side (meaning we agreed with the resolution) against Patuxent Valley Middle School and on the negative side (meaning we disagreed with the resolution) against Oakland Mills Middle School. Our negative team won!!!

Both groups were commended by the judges for their respectful attitudes during the debate and for how we worked together as a team!

Terracycling/Takis Winning Ceremony! Terracycling/Takis Winning Ceremony!

Remember the Takis Recycling Contest from the beginning of the school year? Thomas Viaduct won and received a garden bed, two planters, and a compost bin all made out of recycled Takis packaging that was sent in for recycling! We had our ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, April 4th during first period. Our Green Team students spoke at the ceremony and helped to hold and cut the ribbon for our prizes! TVMS was even featured in a short news piece on WBAL TV and in an article in the Baltimore Sun! We look forward to more projects like this and getting our butterfly garden installed which will use the prizes we won from the Terracycling/Takis contest!

Takis Terracycling Still Continuing! Takis Terracycling Still Continuing!

Even though the contest is over and we won some cool prizes, we are still collecting Takis packaging to send in for recycling. Please collect any empty Takis packages at home over Spring Break and send in when we return to help us continue to keep this trash out of landfills and help us earn points we can redeem for money for TVMS. Thanks for your help!

Student Service Learning Update Student Service Learning Update

As part of 6th and 7th grade third quarter science units, students have engaged in a Curricular Embedded Student Service Learning (SSL) experience. When students pass these courses in the third quarter, the 25 hours for SSL will be issued and will appear on the student report card. Similarly, there is a project in grade 8 social studies during the fourth quarter that will be documented this way. This is an updated process to ensure all students who have engaged in these learning experiences in middle school will be issued the hours if they pass that quarter. Students who do not pass the quarter of a course or are not enrolled in SSL embedded instruction will not receive hours. These students will have the opportunity to engage in high school courses that include SSL and/or engage in high school independent SSL projects. 75 Hours of SSL are required by MSDE for graduation and more information can be found on the HCPSS website here: https://www.hcpss.org/academics/service-learning/

Survey on Student Personal Devices Policy Adjustments, Open Through April 16 Survey on Student Personal Devices Policy Adjustments, Open Through April 16

On March 3, 2025, HCPSS implemented adjustments to Board of Education Policy 8080 Responsible Use of Technology, Digital Tools, and Social Media; specifically, guidelines pertaining to student use of personal devices during the school day.

Per the updated Board policy, all students must keep personal technology devices away and silenced, and ensure they are not a distraction during the student day. Exceptions include smart watches, laptops in high school, and when allowed as defined in a student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP), Section 504 Plan, or Health Plan. Policy violations result in the confiscation of the personal technology device. More information on the policy adjustments is available online.

! Share Your Feedback !

HCPSS students, staff, parents/guardians and family members are encouraged to provide input on implementation, and any impact they may have seen as a result. Please complete a brief online survey. The survey will close on Wednesday, April 16.

Effective the first day of school for the 2025-2026 school year, 1 dose of Tdap vaccine and 1 dose of Meningococcal vaccine (MCV4) are required by the state of Maryland for all students entering grade 7. Many students may have already received these immunizations, but the Health Room may not have the updated immunization record. Call the Health Department at 410-313-7500 for more information and to schedule a vaccination appointment for your child.

If you have further questions, please email Cheryl Harris, TVMS School Nurse, at cheryl_harris@hcpss.org.

In partnership with the Local Children’s Board and the Kahlert Foundation, Fostering Hope: A Youth Mental Health Summit, will take place on April 27, 2025, for middle and high school students (grades 8 through 12).

The Fostering Hope Summit is an event that discusses topics chosen by students, for students. They will receive service learning hours, training on how to engage in healthy lifestyle practices, and resources to bring back to their school.

In an effort to support the community’s mental health, the summit will be hosting guardians/caregivers to partake in parent exclusive workshops during the summit. They will have an opportunity to learn about the community’s mental health resources, hear from professionals that specialize in the needs of children and families, and engage in breakout sessions on topics such as navigating matters out of our control and peer pressure.

* Registration is open and will close on April 19, 2025.

FAMILY FILE UPDATE

Update your family information for the new school year. It is mandatory that all parents/ guardians verify and/ or update emergency information for each child each school year. Updating this information provides us with the most current emergency contact information, and also ensures that you are receiving important information and updates for HCPSS and TVMS.

Log in to HCPSS Connect, select the More Options tab on the left and then select Family File in the center column.

Outside Food Expectations

Food delivery services (i.e. Door Dash, Uber Eats, etc.) are not allowed. Delivery will be refused as we do not have the capability to process this during the school day. If a parent would like to bring their child's lunch to the school, we ask that you do so prior to the start of your child's lunch shift. Parents will need to leave the lunch with our Front Office staff.
